Vog again
#11
I'm not familiar with where the vog tends to normally, or usually blow (vog corridor). But Dory are you saying that it typically by-passes South Point, Punalu'u Beach areas? Does this include Ocean View? So, the vog seems to blow mostly northwest?

We were in Kona on the 26th and it was quite inundated with vog. We flew to Maui and it was voggy there particularly on the 28th. Had never seen it blow over and be so thick on Maui before.

Asly, As I said: "Trade winds always blow from the Northeast in Hawaii." Therefore blowing the vog over Kau; South Point, Ocean View, Pahala, Na'alehu. Vog usually then is blown towards Kona. The previous scenario is when the prevailing trade winds are active.

Recently the winds (not trade winds) have been blowing from the south. This means that now the vog is generally being blown towards Puna, Hilo, Hamakua. This is not the typical trade wind pattern. That's why I said "it's a great time to take a trip to South Point or Punalu'u Beach where it's unusually clear." According to the vog monitoring websites, there is currently quite a bit less vog south of the volcano - meaning Kau district. This is not typical. Kau, Pahala & south are usually inundated w/ vog - when the trade winds are active.

Hope this makes it clearer for you. It's taken me a lot of time & study to understand it. [Smile] Dory

Interesting chart of the mean frequency of trades in Hawaii by month: http://www.pdc.org/iweb/high_wind.jsp?subg=1

Mahalo for that monthly chart of the trades. It's exactly what I'm looking for in making a decision about when to house swap for CA. My damaged lungs cannot handle another winter of vog.

Thanks, Dory
