What is the best ocean beach on the island?

Beach 69 Wailea Bay (if they fix the toilet problem and maintain the site).

I like Hookena. Nice gentle bay, dolphins, big sandy beach with shade, camping.

No easy access but Pohue Bay is the best beach on the planet.

Mauna Kea Beach without question. It's in a protected bay, it has powdery sand, but access is very restricted.

The pink coloration on rocks is a calciferous algae.

One of the things that the Hilo Bay Watershed Advisory Group has tried to determine is HOW the "Visual Observation" was made. As this was a couple of decades ago, it is in the realm of personnel involved memory... and it seems that visual observation was made on a drive by right after a large rain... with the Waialuku screaming.... I am not sure many bays would pass a visual drive-by during a high rain event.... but.... there is no data for this... so the baseline is being done now, a century after most cities that have a major international harbor...

Fire up Google Earth (or google maps) and you can discover your own beaches!
I've seen quite a few that made me wonder if anyone goes there.

For me Kehena is the best beach on the island, especially in the mornings before it's crowded. It's absolutely gorgeous, great sand, lush surroundings, usually good weather, and it's swimmable. And you're free to get in the water as nature intended--without clothing.

robguz..I agree with all you say with the inserted caveat that "swimmable" is a relative term... There have been days that I've left early because I kept stressing out watching people overestimating their strength, endurance or swimming ability (some after being personally warned by locals). Kehena is a great swimming beach if you know what you're doing and use your head...but many don't and don't Smile

Hapuna, because of the facilities, easy swimming and soft sand, even 100 yards out.
