Popolos running out of food early is a good thing because it means their food is finger licking good!! Went to Lucys today for dinner with the family, had the Nacho deluxe and others had the enchilada plate. One word, YUMMY!!!

Stopped by Lucy's tonight and it was completely full with a long line, so we passed. Went to Casa de Luna and were extremely enamored of the ambience they have created. Nice and dim, indoor/outdoor, very adult, full of happy chatter, NO loud music, for which I praised them. Service was outstanding.

Haven't had a beer in ages but tried a draft of Maui Big Wave IPA (or similar name) and was very pleased with the bitter hops flavor. I'm not a beer drinker at all, but something about Mexican food makes a cold one very appealing. (Luckily I had a DD with me.)

I knew Lucy's food would be good, but it has horrible bright lights and that awful music ... so glad we continued on. I will do take-out with Lucy's.

Didn't see any sign of Popolo's. Aloha Luigi's doesn't ring a bell, never noticed it.
Anyhow, I love the tapas menu. We had this artichoke tapas that was terrific.

The music at Lucys is what makes the sit down eating your food more authentic. This is a true Mexican restraunt. The food is awesome!

I have to agree.

Most of my favorite Mexican places on the mainland sometimes had one type of music in the dining room,a radio station blaring from the kitchen and maybe a Mexican soap opera on in another room.

Lucy's is the first place I have been to outside of the Southwest that has what I consider to be Chile Rellenos that are New Mexico style.Roasted and pealed Anaheim peppers are the secret.

"artichoke tapas"
I don't think I would consider a place that has artichoke tapas to be a Mexican restaurant.

Then obviously I wouldn't enjoy Mexico! My companion spent extended time in Mexico and has been to plenty of the authentic places, and is nostalgic for Mexico, but he still hates the music at Lucy's! [:p]

hey, more Lucy's for you guys, different strokes ...
I am very happy with Casa de Luna's ambience and I'll go back there.

I lived in New Mexico a couple of times and love the food there, so I'll try the relleno, thanks Obie.

I never called it a Mexican restaurant. It has two aspects to the menu: tapas menu and "Mexican" plate menu, and it's not billing itself as authentic Mexican. That is Lucy's niche. De Luna is more sophisticated in ambience (for Hilo), more like Hilo Bay Cafe except it has patio style dining.

Obviously it caters to different taste as you can tell by the beer list. Almost all the beer is island brew, except for some Mexican and some German, and it has island brewery beer on tap. And the beer is $5 or even $10 for the Rogue beers. It's aiming at a different demographic if it features micro-brew.

They had fresh caught mahi mahi last night for very good price.

Casa Delunas is not Mexican authentic food, it is more of a Spanish Mediterranean type food!

No expertise on Mexican food, but I do like some of the Monday selections at Ponds and the prices are much better than Casa de Luna. That $5 local draft is only $4.

Which I like ... [Smile]
I don't care whatsoever about whether it is authentic Mexican food. That means nothing to me. I have no nostalgia for Mexico. If food is good, it can be traditional or innovative, and still please me. The point is that I enjoyed eating where I did and most of all enjoyed the ambience, which is so rare for me in Hilo. I can't stand eating to loud music, don't care if it is the authentic custom. [Wink]

Anyway, thanks to this topic and Jay's post I was able to find a place to eat, as the line at Lucy's was going to be too long a wait. Casa was full too, but I hit them at a time when two tables were finishing up, so it worked out.
