Court remands TMT sublease
But what can't robots do?

Design telescopes and use them to explore the galaxy?

Wow, I did ask for it. Mahalo for some very impressive replies PW. I especially liked yours VancouverIslands, thanks for taking the time to share. Yes the article referenced to Oahu's middle class rather than the big island's. Pretty sure most of the TMT construction jobs were going to go to Oahu workers. Some if not the majority of TMT employees were going to come from Japan, China, Canada, India, U.K. and Cal universities, jmo. Please keep the good discussion going with all the possible TMT project pro's for our local economy.

Queue the Punaweb space based, terrestrial telescopes are obsolete brigade.

terrestrial telescopes are obsolete

Fine. Let's use the tech manufacturing sector to design/build robotic interstellar probes, launched from the Kona spaceport.

I realize that's three kinds of development on five kinds of sacred land, but even if it weren't, this place is way too expensive for tech ventures, so that's a non-starter.

Perhaps it's technology itself which is obsolete, here in paradise? Fine. Let's build a series of permaculture working farms to provide enough work, food, and shelter for all the homeless and financially downtrodden.

What? Can't get permits for that? Fine. Let's write some grant proposals to fund studies of why everything is so difficult. It won't create jobs* or provide food or shelter, but at least the homeless people won't freeze to death. Because paradise.

Have any of our telescopes ever, in their years of existence, spotted a space vampire? The answer is NO; because they all use mirrors.

T+9MT construction contract released. The Thirty Nine Meter Telescope is called the European-Extremely Large Telescope. Cost is 400 million Euros or about $800 million, $600 million less than TMT. First light is planned for 2022 if full funding is provided, delayed to 2024 if funds staggered.

Estimates for TMT are 8 years to first light from first construction. If it is in court for a year, that would mean 2025. The E-ELT will be much larger, 39 meters versus 30 meters, cost 40% less and probably be operational a couple years before the TMT. The TMT would be better cutting their losses now, go back to the Atacama site and start construction right away. otherwise, it is going to be yesterday's news by the time it gets finished, which in Hawaii, you know is going to take twice as long and cost twice as much as the original estimate.

These are the last of the ground based optical telescopes. One thing that has happened is launch costs have been decreased to 1/3 of what they were a few years ago. The cost benefit of space based telescopes has greatly swung in their favor over bigger and bigger ground based observatories.

So you're accusing our local University of bribing a judge?

Oh dear. Misinformation and appealing to the lowest common denominator (conspiracy theorists) by the usual suspects.

1) The construction costs for the ELT are roughly $1.2 billion (2012 estimate) with much higher operating costs compared to the TMT once operational. PT's claim of e400 million is for the construction costs of the dome and telescope structure only, which is very clear if you read the article he cites.

2) Reading the court document in the link dakine posts makes it very clear what the reasoning is behind UHH's motion. They are trying to avoid future delaying tactics in the process, so are asking that a new hearing officer be appointed that both sides can agree upon so it won't be the subject of future appeals.

PS. 400 million euros is roughly 450 million US dollars, not 800.
