Cable - in fringe areas sometimes upgrading the lead in cable will help. The previous generation RG-60 does not do well with digital signal.

Yay! Awesome job with the 11 channels! You're getting them all, so permanent installation should be good!

In the next 12 months, it's likely you'll be getting 6 more channels on channel 34 (not sure which 6, but they'll be from this list: http://luken.tv/) and at least 1 channel on 32. :-)

By the way, don't change anything to get 28.8, 28.9 and 51.8 and 51.9. These are mobile/ancillary streams piggybacking on Hawai'i Public TV, not intended for reception on a regular digital TV.

They are coming from the HPTV transmitters in Hilo (on 28) and Mauna Kea (on 51). The transmitter on 51 has an unusual polarization to it, so from my geek standpoint, I'm impressed with your reception of 51.8 and 51.9!! :-)

*Poof* Gone. Even with a new channel scan, I'm not picking up anything over the air. I guess it might be my cables. Or my Antenna. Strongly considering a new antenna or dish.

Thanks for the info. I got a cheap coax at HPM and its given me nothing but problems. I'm going to get a better one for the permanent installation so I won't wind up baking in the attic twice.

I get 10 channels in "lower east Mountain VIew" with:

- amplified antenna from walmart ("RCA", looks like a VHS tape)
- 35-foot mast (two sections of top rail from Big Island Fencing)
- RG6 ("satellite") lead-in

I use a Hauppage HVR1950 (amazon) for recording; they're a little spendy but they work great (it's got an encoder, so works with old/slow computers just fine, unlike the cheap tuners that need a 2GHz system to run the encoder in software).

The "odd" channels (28, 51) are distant repeaters; if you already get "all" the Hilo stations these won't add anything to the lineup.

There is still one old-style low-power NTSC station (45?) with religious programming.

Note that ATSC-over-VHF is actually the exception to the rule; most parts of the country are UHF.

Any update about the new channels on 34?

Unfortunately, I have no updates on Channel 34. They have until September 2015 to complete it. It's owned by Luken Communications who owns Retro TV, TNN (The Nashville Network), MyFamilyTV (which is on Channel 6 in Kona), PBJ (kids), TuffTV, and a few home shopping channels.

My educated guess is that it will carry RTV, TNN, PBJ and TuffTV as subchannels (34.1 - 34.4) and if there's enough bandwidth left on the signal add some of their home shopping (34.5 - 34.6).

Hopefully they get it built in time. With the purchase of Channel 34 (from Trinity Broadcast Network in 2011), they added 78 new stations at once. They're probably making their way through that list. It's approximately #20 on the list, based on market size.
