You'd think with all that eating and smoking that West Virginia would be a happier place. A pretty enough state, that's for sure.
Hawai'i is the best state in America! proof

Glassnumbers, Please don't feel threatened. Everybody has a different sense of humor. It takes a while to get accustomed to everyone. Meantime, go easy.
You have some strong opinions but I doubt that your intention is to dis (respect) anybody. I have never seen anything but information and Aloha from Ms. Mimosa til I read her response to your post. She is Kupuna and normally oozes Aloha. Maybe it was your wish to find a local beauty. Again, giving you the benefit of the doubt, I believe you wanted someone to love, not disrespect or harm. I recommend boatloads of respect and Aloha if you want to be welcomed into a Local family, who are btw, pretty protective of their Maidens. Again, go easy. (Easy for me to say. Slow is my only speed) We each have our " triggers", comments that get us ticked off, and responses depend on what kind of a day we're having. Try not to take responses personally. Most people here mean no harm. Live Aloha Peace...

glassnumbers, pretty much agree w/everything Kenney discussed regarding PT posters and life here on the BI. Whenever anyone travels or chooses to live somewhere new....same formula: respect the people, the land, and their way of life. Same like anywhere you go on this beautiful planet. Keep an open mind, go w/the flow, learn the ways.... Like anywhere else, we meet all sorts of people here w/their own stories or issues. There is a lot of mixing going on in the islands and it ain't no big thing....as long you are respectful and live Aloha. That is something very lovely about living in the Hawaiian islands...the Aloha spirit. Recognize it when you see it, and perpetuate it. [

quote: For chrissakes, it was hot tourist girls, not locals![xx(] Hawaii and Alaska as #1 and 2 sounds right to me, but look out for bears in Alaska and cannibals in Hawaii.

"No drug problem in Ka'u" Hahahahaeffinghe. You have no idea where you are moving to And Ka'u Hospital is an eighteen bed long term care facility. There's and ER doc off and on and a sign that tells you where to call to see if he/she can come while you are dying from a heart attack. The most recent upgrade was someone refinished the hand railings and a couple new chairs. There's no trauma center on the entire Island. Hopefully Queens will continue their expansion. DH is an anomaly in the middle of Ka'u. Many of your neighbors will be on the mainland and with the defunct golf course, it can feel a bit isolated down there. Ka'u is different from Everywhere else. And don't think that because a particular bug or animal is not living there now, that they won't decide on a change of venue or expansion. Or maybe there's something brand new that's going to show up without warning. Nothing here is static or predictable.
But seriously, Glass, maybe you need to just sit back and listen instead of telling people who have a much better understanding of this place what it's really like here. You can read all the crap you want and quote all the Google Hawaiian you'd like, but you're not even close. While it may or may not be exactly third world, you're not going to walk to the corner store when you need a can of beans or something they don't have at Will and Grace's or the Ace Hardware. Maybe you and your mom will love it. But give it time before you talk like you're an expert about this place. It's a real turn off to a lot of people who know much better.

"it was hot tourist girls" Well sure but it doesn't surprise me that MM took offence at the use of the words "hit on", consider all that she must have seen, there has been a lot of change for women during her long life and the fact that she feels empowered to be vocal about her opinion is a blessing to our entire culture. Also little surprise that she would be anti drug particularly when the person using is on disability support.
I think what might be a good idea G#'s is to apologize. You are now in the unenviable position of going toe to toe with a matriarch in a culture that supports them strongly. It may be an unfortunate surprise when the words you use so freely on the web come back to haunt you in real life. As much as you would have us all respect that you are autistic, you should, in turn, understand what kind of person you are choosing to insult. We all face our own challenges, just imagine what MM may have lived through, the fact that she shows any aloha at all speaks to her very generous nature. Rather than make an enemy of her, perhaps being kind and humble may yield sweeter fruit? Just imagine all that she might teach you about this place you look forward with such excitement to arriving in. My 2 cents, probably all it's worth. Maybe there is some connection between bears and sharks and perceived quality of life? Perhaps if manatees were more dangerous FLA would move up the list? "It's amazing that a family can be torn apart by something as simple as a pack of wolves" SNL, Jack Handy, Deep thoughts.

There's no trauma center on the entire Island.
We have helicopters that can take you to the trauma center, doesn't that count? Just like the way all airports are now "international", because you can get a connecting flight from there.

G# - Your extremely rude suggestion we move is an insult to our entire ohana.
I am born n raise here.1925 to be exact.Hubby born in Hana Maui in 1921. How about you research Standard School in Hilo during WW2 and the cane haul days. I was the 1st non Caucasian to attend and my 8 siblings followed in my foot steps . There are laws in this state protecting all lady tourists from being hit on by Neanderthals like yourself. How do you know the cane spider was trying to get into your hale?Did he or she knock or ring your bells?Maybe he or she was welcoming you with warm aloha. We speak fluent dialects of pidgin,Tagalog and Hawaiian and English. Are you going to tell every one you meet that our dialect is not up to your california standards G# ? You are just a tourist. 2 weeks here and you are not an expert in anything . You readily admit you are a fool by trespassing on private property .Plus you want a gf,once a lady finds out you smoke drugs and live at home with mommy your chances diminish drastically in our perspective. None of our ohana are on govt assistance - we work and pay taxes unlike you who take take take - not once have you said you are working at a higher paid job,but you have stated in not so many words you are on the dole . I work 5 jobs still today, plus we are farmers who help families who may not have enough to feed their children. We teach farming to the K through 3rd graders at Kam School in Hilo . It is volunteer . Every one of our ever growing ohana is taught how to rebuild a motor, how to butcher live stock and to provide for the future generations. Not on the dole of Govt assistance like yourself . Lucky for you, their are drug houses in D.H. where you can buy the drugs you smoke. Or will you be growing your legal 170 plants to cloud your mind even further ? And you must travel via the National Park to get to Hilo or Puna .Federal laws if you are carrying drugs will get you an automatic 30 years. You are just a tourist. Our entire ohana is sure the place you came from over in america is happy to see you leave. Tic Tok Tic Tok . Mrs.Mimosa

Yes, helicopters can take you to a trauma center. . . on Oahu. Every minute counts with serious trauma and many pass on the way. Just pointing out the fallacy in GNs statement. He hasn't even tried to find a doctor or dentist yet. . .

I have to agree with you Glassnumbers about Kau verses Hilo/Puna. And wow, you’ve done so much research, amazing how much you can learn from the web. I’m in my mid-70's and much of what I’ve learned has been experiential rather than cyberential. I don't even have a smartphone. You are correct, Hilo side/Puna has virtually no beaches, there are lagoons in Hilo but they are crowded, hard to park and the water can be cold/brackish with underground springs. The only Puna swim beach has no rest rooms and is often filled with woofers who camp there; it’s small, remote, dangerous to swim and difficult to reach, cliff climb, plus c/optional though illegal. Dogs run loose, their owners sometimes don’t clean up after them. Hapuna and Mauna Kea Beach are awesome with lots of youth. Puna you get tired of the same old people, some unwashed, many on the dole. Kona always has lots of new arrivals and visitors and guys/gals your age who cater to the tourists. The drive from DH to Hilo is up 4K down 4K and the same on return plus the speed limit thru the park is only 45 mph and it can run around 160 or more miles RT. Past the park Hilo side it almost always drizzles. There is no Costco as you state and prices are double the mainland for staples. Hiloside culture is different from Amerika and it takes a few years (from my experience) for a newcomer to get settled and recognized as being kama aina, i.e. accepted as local. Puna has lots of noisy loose jungle fowl, see posts re: roosters, and the frogs coqui all night when it rains. 12 feet of rain, OMG. Infrastructure like street lights, piped water, garbage pickup, paved roads is lacking. Poor internet and none in places. I live in Orchidland Estates, "estates," that's a joke, lots of poverty, no soil, gotta plant in cinders. Helicopters overhead all day. The main road 130 backs up and there are few restrictions on subdivisions. Some people Hilo side never visit Kona side, I for example go once every two years or so, it’s too far, so you’ll likely be much happier sticking to the dry side of paradise. Oh did I mention mold on your buds should you try to grow. Welcome though to your new adventure, enjoy your 2000 sf house, mine is only 945 sf with just one bathroom. Hope to meet you one day to put a face to the name. I shall be most interested to hear of your adaptations once you reside in the remote island in the pacific. Remember that you are young and life is a journey. Aloha nui loa.
