Moving forward: The Digital Era on the Big Island
#21
LOL!

Of course it's free there. This is exactly what I'm talking about.

Big Island has something similar EXCEPT IT runs $73 for just the Basics and is only 6 hours total:

"...Each month, the Center offers three basic courses: Introduction to the Computer; Basic Word Processing; and Internet & Email. The courses consist of three two-hour sessions, with enrollment limited to a maximum of 10 students. In addition to the basic courses, classes are offered each month on one or more of the following: Database; Spreadsheet; Scanning and Digital Imaging; and How to Make Your Own Greeting Cards. The cost for each course is $21, plus a one-time charge of $10 for the spiral-bound workbook that covers the basic courses as well as Database and Spreadsheet..."

"...In order to take a class at our Learning Center you must become a member of the national organization for an annual fee of $40..."

So if there are 10 students taking these classes every month that's a lot of Kala considering I see more then 20 classes taught last month alone.

Are these seniors then "penned in" for that annual fee of $40.00 each year there after?

I'd like to see one of those contracts.

"Introduction to the Computer; Basic Word Processing; and Internet & Email."

I enjoy the concept of getting Seniors involved and hooked on the internet... but charging them $40 for the national organization... then charging them another $73 bucks for 3 classes where they learn how to word process, surf the internet and use email?

$113 per senior citizen??? Times how many senior citizens on this island?

Oh geez... I need to look into something like this.

I wouldn't even need to charge the national fee and everything could be done for free at a public library.[Wink]

$600 a month is a nice little side gig for a guy who brings in volunteers to teach the classes.

Does he need a paid assistant [Wink]

If 30 seniors per month sign up... that national organization is sucking up $1200 a month.

Multiply that by all the communities they are running this program in... 100+

You're looking at an organization bringing in $120,000 a month off teaching senior citizen very little skills.

I'm not knocking this place... but they sure are banking off senior citizens.

It looks like it is happening sooner rather than later--
AT&T to expand coverage in Hawaii

AT&T is planning to add nearly 10 new cell cites throughout Hawaii this year
Orchid Land/Paradise Park, Hilo Hospital and Paauilo on the Big Island. AT&T also will add more 3G wireless broadband network capacity throughout the state.

From 2006 to 2008 AT&T invested more than $85 million in Hawaii.

We have their wireless service here for years and they have went out of their way to always make it work with updating equipment etc.

Here on the Mainland, wifi access is becoming practically a civil right. Dial up is so 90's, I don't know anyone that connects that way except folks that are too thrifty (cheap) to fork over for a little bandwidth. It will be interesting to see how my wife and I will adapt when we move over a few years from now. I don't think I'll miss it that much with a little time to adjust. I remember not that long ago a 24 k baud modem was fast! LOL

I still come across dialup clients occasionally. Usually, they are people that either cannot or refuse to pay for satellite at $80 per month as opposed to AOL at around $25 a month. The problem is that web sites have become so graphic oriented and "updates" from various apps and the OS itself have become so pervasive that the first 1/2 hour of their on-line experience are wasted by updates!

I don't know any one who refuses to pay for satellite as it is a high cost upfront and per month. It is quite expensive for those who don't have a lot to begin with and it is quite high for those who have good jobs here. It is also quite unreliable from what I hear.

A good portion of the island does not offer any high speed Internet except satellite. So dial-up at $5.00 per month is their only other choice other than not at all. Since DSL is distance limited only those who live within a certain distance from the nearest phone company building can get it. And as you get farther away your access speed availability goes down as well. I would guess to say that at least 25% of my customers whose homes I visit to do computer warranty repairs have dial-up. This includes those who have access to cable and DSL but can only afford or choose dial-up.

I have Road Runner which has been reliable but somewhat expensive in my opinion.

Does anyone here use Skype? I am having a blast doing video phone calls to my family on the mainland, Israel and Argentina for FREE!!!!

Skype has been pretty unreliable for us and we ended up removing the program from our computers. We have been using VoiceStunt ever since and it seems to be a much better choice.
