Aloha - I am brand new to your terrific forum. I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on this place to stay. Wild Orchid Vacation Suite.
It looks beautiful. I am coming for 10 days over Christmas and New Year. Also to do some looking into property. I'm am Hilo Girl, St Joe., left the Islands in 1981, now I want to come back.
Would like to hear if anyone has an opinion on this place.

Thanks Wayne, and everyone. As for Absolute Sniffy Land, they have plenty to be sniffy about -- the place looks gorgeous. I just said it to be cute though. It isn't based on anything other than the fact that I received no response when I e-mailed them to see what they thought of the area (there is a property closeby). As I was e-mailing a business with an idle inquiry about the area in general, a non-response can certainly be overlooked. Not everyone is as generous with their insights as the folks on this forum. And yet, I do have a gift for being able to size up situations pretty quickly.... : )

Focus for me is on HSRE, maybe Beaches, those few places in HPP that are on a well, and one place way out on Kalapana-Pahoa road that I think is charming but awfully close to that lava stuff, which my partner will probably not go for, and which may be out of range.

Hi Mel!
Welcome to the forum!
I went to Union School for one year then to De Silva Elementary for a year. 7th & 8th grades it was St Joe’s. Those Sisters are something else!!! Moved back to the Mainland in ’72. My wife and I hope to be back on the Big Island for good in ’08.

Good Luck!

we stayed in Kehena Beach Estates at Coconut Landing. it was good for us because there were five of us but might be too pricey otherwise. Very nice place and it was good to stay there because it convinced us that we didn't want to live there. (in that general area.)

Piece of cake to get to anywhere. Hilo was a bit far but not bad. Even Volcano was okay and my kids went to Kona . This is a big island but small compared to a lot of states so the driving didn't seem at all bad to us. You can cover all of Puna easily from any location within it.

YES to Readymaps. Worth their weight in gold.

They are awesome. Quite detailed, and very necessary if you are scouting a living space.

aloha glen,

you might want to rent in several spots, a couple days in kapoho, in HPP, and so on. it'll give you a better idea of the neigborhoods, traffic, weather, driving distances, etc. kapoho has unbelievable snorkeling, maybe the best i've seen in the islands. the big island will be quite different than moloka'i, especially puna. unless you've spent time on the east side of moloka'i, which is more like puna. but as folks have stated here, the big island is BIG, so it won't be a quick drive across the island like moloka'i.

while on moloka'i, did you stop at the "beach boy ranch" on the west side, near mahana? my buddy kealoha (also known as "pee wee"Wink and his wife janie run that little roadside farm. you can't miss it if you've been there. its an oasis out in the middle of nowhere. just curious...

puna is great, just be ready for the rain, bugs and frogs!

malama pono,

holahan

Aloha Holahan,

I kinda recall a Beach Boy Ranch but I did not stop there. I was trying to find Dixie Maru beach and wasn't stopping for anything. I found it and that is where I lost my mind and decided that visiting Hawaii would not be enough. I had to live there. That was Day Four. Moloka'i is actually pretty big if you drive it longways. I did not see it all, even though I was there 5 days. I never even got to Kalapana (?) because the Mule Ride was rained out for the first time in a long time.

Great tips about where to rent, thank you. I really am getting interested in the Kapoho area and the tidepools and warm pools. I have never snorkeled but I plan to! Just gotta get some of that snorkeling stuff!

Frogs, lava, centipedes on one side, affordable housing, great beauty, real Hawaii and real people on the other side. I can't wait to get there and see for myself.

Mahalo!

Your tips are very helpful.
