Crikey. Looks like the floor is caving in. There is lots of molten squishiness and brightness. One side of the crater thing appears to have crumbled.

As you can tell, I am not a vulcanologist.

Hey there, DaKine...I remember a less-than-24-hour eruption at Napau Crater prior to the start in Jan 1983 of the current eruption. It was the prettiest eruption I ever saw...we were actually bused by the park to the parking lot near the crater and were allowed to stand on the crater's edge and watch the lava pouring out of a tube in the south wall of the crater, about halfway up and snake through the crater floor as dusk set in. It was awesome!

OK, so I obsessively watch those webcams for 4 or 5 years, and on the one day I am stuck in the Honolulu airport waiting for a delayed flight home to Hilo, it gets REALLY interesting. I hope HVO posts webcam video showing what I missed.

I got to watch much of it unfold.

I am a little worried about where all of that lava is heading !!

Andrew Cooper of the Keck posted a time-lapse video of the Pu'u O'o collapse on his blog:

Pu'u O'o collapse

The lava lake at Halema'uma'u Crater has dropped quickly in the past few hours (I've been capturing the odd webcam image from there over the last few hours) although I know it's being going up and down for a while now and don't know is this is an unusually large and quick drop in the lake's level.

Wasn't there a brief eruption in the Napau area just before the whole Thanksgiving episode began east of Pu'u O'o? Deja vu'?
