The idea of laying in the sun on a beach is torture to me. Pohoiki has as beautiful water as anywhere on the island; just no sand. Go there and enjoy.

Good point! There's not much of that on this side.

When I go to Hilo to do my serious shopping, I love visiting Richardson's and to walk along the bay front, too.

Champagne pond and Shipman are other places to get into the water. The hike into Kehena I don't consider that difficult. My mom and her friend 65 and 74 did it just fine, but they both hike a lot. There are sort of 2-3 ways in. The main way has a more gently sloping offshoot for part of the way down.

or you can just take the zipline vine ride over the side of the cliff - seen it done!

Kehena is not hard to get to if you are an average person, Ive seen many large overweight people down there, also a guy with 1 leg... dont give up, the 1st 10' of the trail is the worst... the rest is very easy, I run down there Smile
other "beaches" besides Kehena, if you can call them that are the "new beach" @ Kalapana, Pohoiki Bay, Shipman Beach, thats really it.... rest is all sea cliffs or landings.. aloha

save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha

For lap swimming, the free county pool in Pahoa can't be beat! Not salt water and fish, but safe and a beautiful facility.

We LOVE Richardsons for some snorkeling and a relaxing beach day...set up the chairs...kick back and maybe take a couple of dips in the pretty water...saw a pod of spinner dolphins showing off a week ago or so...it's a good thing!
