I left via a back exit today due to the traffic being backed up. Not sure if it was newly reopened or if I just hadn't noticed it before. It came out to ka ohuwalu street. It was single lane, so exit only.

Before they started charging admission there was a back entrance / exit? What happened to that? Could they put a second toll booth there?

we never seem to get anything completely right around here

Oh, you talking about the free entrance? That's the Maku'u Kama'aina discount!

It's supposed to be a one way exit so it's important to remain inconspicuous, by backing in slowly.

Haha well saving a dollar to get in hardly matters with all the money spent inside. Money flies out of my pocket there...

Seems like a feasible entrance when the wait to get in coming from Ainaloa onto the Highway is more than 20 minutes because the left turn lane isn't long enough for the traffic they're attracting. Who cares about 1$ I'll pay it, 20 minutes in line is a different story.
There isn't even a "no entry" sign by that back gate. Go for it.[8D]

We went at our usual time yesterday, 7 am, and there was no traffic. The vegis and fruit are nice and fresh, but the food court booths aren't prepped and ready to serve that early. We just go for fresh vegis so it works for us.

Maku'u Market is becoming a problem to PEOPLE NOT GOING there!!.. it was backed up so far back Sunday, I though there was an accident on north side of Ainaloa.. I and may people need to get places and this overhyped Farmers Market is messing with people now.. they need a different entry system, the hwy is now being heavily affected by them!
Why does it HAVE TO BE right next to/ON the only hwy. relocate the damn thing a 1/2 mile off the hwy somewhere..

The PCDP says "no driveways on the highway" because "congestion, sprawl".

PCDP table 5-1 (page 5-7) "Use and Design Criteria by Village/Town Center Type":
commercial or public uses without direct driveway access to Highway 11 or Highway 130
Makuu clearly qualifies as a "Village Center" or equivalent. However: section 4.4 (page 4-7) clearly states
the County does not have control over State highways
Which begs the question: how can we manage growth in Puna when we don't have jurisdiction over all the pieces/parts?
