Saturday Veterinary Emergency
#31
Carey, my husband called the mobile vet over the weekend, but they would not see Benia because she was not an established patient with them. Sooo glad we were able to get into Aloha on Monday - -close call.

The Red Cross gave a pet first aid class in Hilo last weekend. I think they give them at regular intervals, maybe quarterly?

use it up, wear it out, make it do, do without
I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.

Thanks Daniel. She is better. I am always so frustrated at the Vet response. I know they're busy. I had one afterhours vet tell me that he couldn't help her because they are emergency response for four clinics and since her regular doctor isn't one of those he couldn't help.

I mean - what the hell?!!

Carrie,

I am sure glad to hear that it all turned out well for you. We are moving to Hilo and I really want to find a vet that does do emergency service and I hope we never need it. I think that clinics that are set up for emergency services also have more high tech equipment and that can be important.

So, in and around Hilo... does anyone have a vet that they really like who also does emergencies or is at least in some kind of network?

That would be so upsetting if you had a really sick or injured pet.

Devany - you won't have a choice. We take our dogs to Aloha Vets and they are really wonderful...hands down. But on the weekends, if you have a vet emergency, reaching someone is next to impossible. And if you DO reach someone, they will give you a number for emergency vets, which will tell you that they are overwhelmed with emergency situations and cannot take another one. This is the SECOND time this same scenario with the vets has happened with us since moving here.

I finally got a call back from one of the vets and she was amazing, but if Frida were dying it would've been too late. As it turns out we think she was having a low sugar reaction and nearly passed out...she was almost non-responsive. We followed our insticts and she's bouncing around the house again.

I guess we really just need to know more about emergency pet care.

Carrie,I am glad that Frida is OK now.
You mention low blood sugar.Did they tell you what caused it?
She is too young...

They said it's common in smaller breeds...she needs to keep eating all the time since she's a puppy. Frankly, she plays so much she forgets there's food! LOL

They said to put honey or karo syrup on my finger and feed her that if she looks lathargic again like this.

Carrie,

It is wonderful that she is OK. That sounds like a VERY scary incident! What kind of a puppy is she? I have a Cavalier who is on a diet and she just sits in front of her bowl and barks at me wanting more food! LOL. She is 4 years old. Well at least you know the cure now.

We had a golden that died last Spring of Spleen Cancer, we had surgery and she did great for 2 weeks and then it went to her spine. Within a matter of days she could no longer walk and it got really bad. The vet gave us his cell # and told us to call WHENEVER we were ready. Finally on a Sunday afternoon, we knew it was time and he met us at the office (closed) and we said good bye to her. She was looking into my eyes when she passed.

There is nothing like the love of a dog, nor the fear invoked when they are severely ill or injured.
