Question please for old timers .. How far can you go on 9 road past G ? Driven it well past no track visible to only grass but chickend out and 180ed.

Hey Mimosa, I think you might be my neighbor soon. I'll be moving to 4 between D and E some time after october. My mother will probably be out there sooner. Anyway, this is all good to know. I was going to start paying some road maintenance fees already but maybe I should wait until they sort they situation out and find someone better to manage the funds. Or maybe I should pay on principal. Anyway, I drove out there and my mother has been driving out there a few times. It's bad but really it's just a matter of being cautious and slow. Road 4 between D and E is not that bad at all though I haven't gone all the way down the block yet.

Mimosa, the G Rd end of 9 used to go out to what was once known as "G & 1/2 Rd," which is a sort of an easement between the backs of the lots abutting G Rd & the forest reserve. Someone bought that lot several years ago so there is no access to that trail anymore.

I've gone to only one HACA meeting, and that was a few years ago. The president showed up with a wad of voting proxies--more proxies than there were members in attendance (or ever likely to be in attendance)--so everything she supported passed.
I figure that if I agree with the prez, I don't have to get involved because it will happen. If I disagree, I'll have to get my own wad of proxies. Seems like a lot of work, so I just don't pay dues and let them do what they want. It always seems to center around the community center, which is 7 miles of bad roads from my house.
I have been paying my road dues--I figure that's the buy-in if I want to complain about the roads--but didn't realize the funds were being used for other than road maintenance.

Technically, the lots at either end of G are 150x910 (approx) and so include the "road", but the owners of those lots have not bothered to fence to their front property line.

Those who claim to love the bad roads should be delighted that several new potholes have surfaced on Road One since this thread started. Most of them yesterday in the heavy rain. I nailed two new ones as they were submerged and hadn't yet been stored in my mental map of hazards. It's getting hard to remember where so many of them are now. When they are underwater they become invisible which is why some drivers never go over 3 mph. I suspect that those who claim to love bad roads aren't being entirely honest. Some years ago when the community was asked to talk about road fees one woman I know said she preferred the bad roads. I asked her why I always saw her driving out on Road One when she was closer to 2 and it was a terrible road. She had no answer. I think the honest statement is that we, including myself, don't want double lanes paved throughout the subdivision but we'll always choose the better road when we need to go out.
In all of these responses on this thread I haven't seen anyone offering any solutions to our problem. To repave a single lane to bring Road One back to it's former condition will cost $400,000. A bake sale ain't gonna make it. Any ideas out there??? This situation is being repeated all over the country. It's called Crisis Planning. Heads remain buried in the sand until the problem is so overwhelming that people are forced to take some emergency action that is almost always a bad choice. How do you think LA became what it is today? Crisis Planning! Some people are still complaining about the county taking Road Eight over. You didn't offer any solutions then and I don't hear any now.
I don't go to road meetings anymore but I heard from a trusted source that the current lawsuit against the road committee is a frivolous one that was started by an upset resident that demands that the road committee fix the problem on the road that was created by the homeowner herself. As I understand it the attorney for the road committee has agreed to take it on a contingency basis because it's so outrageous that he sees no problem winning and a countersuit is in the works. Maybe they'll win enough money to fix a bit of the road.

Here is a solution.... The HoA should join with other subdivisions and sue the State of Hawaii for denial of a fair share of the Fuel Tax Revenue. For fifty years every mile driven by every car on the Big Island on all 750 miles of private road generate Fuel Tax Revenue (FTR) which, by law, is intended to be spent in maintaining the roadways what generate the revenue.
Millions of dollars have been diverted from Puna and spent in Hilo and other locations.
I spent four years tying to see if there was a political solution. After watching bills be sabotaged by Billy Kenoi and Faye Hanohano I have concluded that only a lawsuit in state or federal court will work. There are enough subdivisions to accomplish this IF they are capable of working together and not just arguing.
Assume the best and ask questions.
