KathyH, as of today (10/27) at this hour (12:05pm),
Pahoa Village Road is now one way out of Pahoa town. Until further announcements are made by CD, it would make sense to tell our visitors, "NOW is NOT the time." Please allow for emergency procedures to be in place, not to mention, some sort of privacy in the final moments of someone's home being destroyed.
The unspoken reverence of this event should include privacy for those who are directly affected. Some of us are ohana to those nearest the threat, and respectfully ask on their behalf, for time to deal with immense potential loss.
There will be a time when our visitors, and residents, will be able to view the lava at a safe distance. Again, now is really not the time. At all.
Mahalo so much. Mean no disrespect to anyone.

Opihikao, no offense at all. That is why I asked.
There have been two perspectives offered here on Punaweb:
One is we need outsiders to stay out while we deal with our loss.
The other is town is full of people and the merchants need business.
As for myself, I don't deal well with smoke so I changed my mind. Also I didn't have a free day over the weekend and this week looks hectic too. By I was also asking what to say to tourists. Can I quote your post? It is eloquent.

KathyH, mahalo for understanding. A few days ago, it was so different from today, and perhaps, tomorrow. We shall see.
One other friendly reminder for all is the safety concerns in hiking into areas already deemed "OFF LIMITS". Yesterday, a young couple got lost in the thick of the forest, and HFD had to send the chopper and several units to rescue them. I sure hope they get the bill for that effort, as they were clearly "off limits", not to mention, put our first responders in jeopardy.
This is only a temporary request. We will all know more in the coming days (and weeks). As we all settle into the "new" reality, we will have the opportunity to show our visitors (and each other) how Puna has evolved without losing the true spirit of "aloha". Not only for the aina we love, but for each other. So much good is going on right now in the face of adversity. Mahalo to all!
Tomorrow will be a better day. Mahalo ke Akua.

Someone wrote (at link): “Chaos at Pahoa Post Office this morning, before they made it a one way road, only allowing cars to exit Pahoa. Tourists are parking in the post office stalls and nosy people are cluttering our roads. It took 20 minutes to find parking just to check our mail.”

This evening's added influx of people who want to capitalize on the phenomenon of "Tutu Pele". A'ole! [ !]
Attention, Shane Turpin and Travis Sanders: If these posts are true, STAND DOWN. [ !] Not everything is "for sale", young man.
Shame on you! All of you! [ !] SMH.

shane turpin and travis sanders apparently live in puna somewhere. i doubt they are born & raised there but if they are, wow. anyway, they are "trying" to organize a lava march tmrw in pâhoa, chanting "access for all" buahahahahaha ... supposedly shane is a lava tour operator grumbling about not being able to take his "customers" to "view this spectacular wonder of nature" or something ladat.
If anyone knows these two (2) young men, if there is one ounce of decency in their body, please tell them this is SO wrong. A lava march? Seriously? For the love of God, and all that is holy in your life and family.
Stand down. [ !] Disgusted beyond words.

opihikao, you can see Shane and Travis interviewed here (Oct 25) ... the clip turns to lava tours at about 1:30 in. They are followed by a short bit with Oliveira and then a moving comment from Piilani Kaawaloa.

(video can be slow to load, wait for it, near the top)
I think Shane has been doing tours in the closed forest reserve ever since the ocean entry stopped and killed the demand for his Lava Ocean boat tours. (I'm not for either one, and I thought his grumbling about his "bottom line" on the video was disgusting.

Exactly where does he grumble about his bottom line in this video? He says no such thing.

PaulW, Mileka Lincoln reports it is his words: "his bottom line has been crippled" @ 1:43 (prior to his interview).
Mahalo, Kathy for the video, and it appears he has taken down his call for a march demanding access. Good choice, young man.
