Still too early to know.
The storm center has actually slowed down even more from 12 kts to 8 kts overnight and is now at about 10 kts (this is considered slow). This makes it very hard to predict, especially when a large ridge is interacting with it causing a curve. This is why you see such a large divergence in the models. They are still predicting a turn, but they are having to converge models for this forecast. I'd say it's still tough to call where it will be, but we should see some bands of wind and rain Sat. morning as it will be close enough to Hawaii to start affecting weather. The GFS model has it going over south point and LBAR model has it going north this afternoon and slowing down more completely missing us.

dunno, from the sat loops, looks like a rain maker and some tropical breezes to me. Might be a few heavy wind gusts. Maybe enough to push down a few albizia trees that hopefully won't knock out the power for everyone.
Hopefully Sunday/Monday will get tradewinds back.

Good point Ericlp. Driving around many places in Nanawale estates makes me think some here in Puna may be without power come Monday, due to the many fallen albizia tree's. We hope that Helco and the geothermal power plant make the decision, to go cut the power before an albizia tree does it for them or risks the safety and health of our community again. Some here in Leilani estates, If they got the message, were not asked to evacuate during TS Iselle due to the wind, rain, or surf. Some were asked or advised to evacuate due to the geothermal power plants planned operational release or blowout procedures during TS Iselle. We hope this doesn't happen this time too and that they both are better prepared this time around.

You and all of your neighbors should prepare ahead and evacuate to Pahoa High School. That would be the sensible thing to do but you won't will you ? Jmo

Really!
PGV causes tropical storms didn't you know? Pahoa Shelter at the HS opens at 4 pm today.

FYI:
http://westhawaiitoday.com/news/local-ne...head-storm Updated: July 22, 2016 - 1:08pm West Hawaii Today Mayor Billy Kenoi Friday signed an emergency proclamation in anticipation of the arrival of Tropical Storm Darby. The storm, which was packing 60 mph winds Friday morning, is forecast to impact Hawaii Island starting Friday evening through late Sunday. The proclamation allows easier access to county emergency resources, along with the suspension of certain laws as needed for emergency purposes. “We want to make sure we are doing everything possible to protect the public,” said Kenoi. “This proclamation improves the county’s ability to respond quickly to any potential impacts from the impending storm.” The disaster emergency relief period for the proclamation began at noon Friday and will continue for 60 days.

Good one Kalakoa.
This type of storm concern or added preparation may come with future geothermal health benefits like the ones in Iceland, say's Obie. When we feel earthquakes, smell gases, or see dead Ohia trees we also think about the nearby Geothermal power plant because they have been known to also cause these things. We don't have many choices anymore as home-rule has been taken away from the community regarding any geothermal production in the area. Relocation has also become increasingly difficult as the relocation program continues to be manipulated and tapped into by our local county council and political representatives.jmo.

This topic really deserves its own thread... You can't relocate without a bailout? If it's really so dangerous to live near PGV, wouldn't pitching a tent be an improvement? Surely, with the litany of hazards and corruption, you can find grounds for a lawsuit? Does ranting on PW make the PGV plant safer? It never ceases to amaze, how many problems PGV is responsible for. Storm? PGV. Albizia? PGV. Homelessness? PGV. Police brutality? PGV. pCard corruption? PGV. This stupid post? PGV. |
