On the mainland we had a few chains with carts that would only come apart with a quarter placed in a slot. Kids (ok, me and my friends) would make enough money fetching far flung carts (and getting the quarters back) to buy all our snacks.

Aldi does that.  But then again Aldi is from Germany and all stores there do it that way.  I wouldn't mind paying a quarter to rent a cart if it meant lower prices from the store.... though I haven't touched a quarter in a long time.

Reading this thread makes me wonder whether hunter-gatherers living in the Great Rift Valley had less trouble getting food than 21st century shoppers at a Pahoa grocery store.

I waited for the opening day crowd to die down a little but I finally went today. The aisle signs are up now. The parking lot was crowded but doable. Parking spaces seemed like a reasonable size. What I found most interesting, aside from the cart shortage (more are on their way, I'm told) was that when you exit the store, there is no direct way to take your cart into the parking lot. Why a curb instead of a ramp? You need to go through the handicapped parking spaces to access the lot. Weird. Also, aisles have barely enough room for two carts to pass but the deli area is overly spacious. Still scratching my head about the in-store bar. Good prices on organic dairy, really good looking produce, good assortment of fresh fish and a ridiculous amount of wine and liquor. And Aaron sitting on the ground just outside the store. There's no place like home.
Certainty will be the death of us.

Harder to steal the carts?

I saw a "Dominos coming soon" sign today so there will be an alternative to pizza hut.

Also a "coming soon" sign on Popeyes. Do they still have a dirt floor?

Do they still have a dirt floor?

Yes. Best working theory: there's only one crew who knows how to build out fast-food, so maybe they'll get going on Popeye's after the McDonald's is finished.

Went by the mall today and noticed that a Food Court is "coming soon". Looks to be 3,000 square feet on the map. How many food vendors can they stick in that space?

I'm hoping for a Dairy Queen. Or a Pel Meni stand. Or something German themed. Dream big! It will probably be different flavors of bland Asian food.

I also saw Wok Through Italy "coming soon" underneath where the medical clinic is opening. Asian/Italian Fusion?

I was just getting ready to clean up my resume when I noticed discounts on food?  Discounts?!

If I'm the GM of of a fast food restaurant either I get FREE diarrhea or no deal.

Speaking of diarrhea, when does McDonalds open?
