I think the entire Puna area has been under attack for quite some time now.

The problems being mentioned now... are the same ones being mentioned 15 years ago.

Here we go again with the "lethal force gun nuts". Thirty eight years and one war ago I was rated expert with an M-16, .38 revolver, and .45 automatic.

I haven't felt the need to carry a weapon since. I enjoy a daily tranquility that's unattainable while carrying a weapon. In fact while these armed and dangerous folks think they are secure in their life, their stress and paranoia is probably deducting years from it.

These armed geezers crack me up with their tough talk. Unless they frequent a range on a fairly regular basis, which I doubt, they probably would kill their dog or a neighbor kid by mistake. But hey, anything to save the stereo.

I have a feeling that "tough TALK" is pretty much all there is to most of it here on the digital highway.

I guess I am a gun nut.

Jon,

I like your style, much better armed and dangerous than dead and in the dirt. I'm guessing that a crook will pick some other place to rob if they know that they WILL get their ass blown away. Greg, not "tough talk", fact. You can live in your warm and fuzzy world but that will not stop the crooks and it only gives you a false sence of peace.

well Damon, my concern is where my family & I live right now , which is HPP. That is why I was curious about how many Keaau cops work on one shift?
Perhaps HPP should go to the Mayor or City council and ask if it would be possible to put a few Police Kiosk around the larger subdivisions so these cops can get to crimes as they happen, instead of hours later. Or Perhaps HPP should think about diverting some of their annual road fees to shore up their neighborhood watch & remove some Albezia trees too. I mean after all not all the HPP residents are gonna get their roads paved. Yet we are expected to pay this annual road fee.

As for having a gun at home. I have heard time and time again of accidents were the kids find their father's handgun. Usually an accidental death follows these situations, or at least nothing good comes from such episodes.
I remember living at Pupukea Heights back in the 70's. My neighbor at the time was a famous east coast surfer named Jeff Crawford. He would stay at this house, his mother's part-time when coming over for the winter surf. Well to pay for his surf season. His sponsors would pretty much pay for 50% of his expenses. But Jeff partied hard back in those days. Him and his east coast surf buddy Roger Kincaid would fly from Florida to Oahu with anywhere from two to four suitcases full of Columbian cannabis. He would sell it on the North Shore to help subsidize his winter expenses & pleasures.
Well low and behold Jeff comes home one night from partying in Haleiwa just to be robbed inside his own home, with his own gun!!! Yes, the perps found his home defense and almost turned it on him!
I don't think anybody in the Civilian sector should own a gun. Hunters should be the only people owning one!

Beachboy,

I suggest that you take your ideas, which are good, to the HPP BoD, to Councilwoman Emily Naeole and to (soon to be) Mayor Kenoi and be prepared to work on it for a few years. Results can occur if enough steady pressure is applied. The biggest single problem with getting this stuff to happen is everyone wants to talk about it and then wait for someone else to make the effort.

Beachboy, as a frequent (and frustrated) participant in the HPP paving discussions, I can tell you that there will be no money from the road assessments to divert for any purpose. Hell, there probably won't be enough left after the paving to maintain the remaining unpaved roads. Expect your assessments to go way up and the quality of your roads to go down.

Have you ever attended an HPP Board meeting? Have you considered joining the HPP Neighborhood Watch? I joined, and there are things being done, although I think we need to do more, and I speak up at every meeting. Have you called or written to any of our political leaders? I do this, but not enough others seem to care. I actually got Emily Naeole to verbally agree that HPP is big enough to deserve its own police substation, but she has made no move to make that a reality. If a hundred or two hundred other people push for this, she might actually do something.

I agree with you that guns are not the solution. Community activism and forcing the authorities to do their jobs through political pressure is a place to start.

Cheers,
Jerry

I think hpp has been big enough for a substation for some time. But as an alternative till something better comes along why not use a volunteer patrol and reimburse them so much for gas. They wouldnt have the power to arrest people but could be a deterrent to thieves who are afraid of getting caught.
