Interesting reading on the hunter bishop link below...

"This is becoming really interesting, the more light that is cast on the zoning process the more questions seem to pop up. Somethings that were stated made lots of sense.

Lets take this scenario:

a. Developer- Buy a nice piece of ag. property that is on the busy #130 highway at a relativity inexpensive price.

b. Developer- Draw up some plans of a low impact commercial facility that will make the Council think we are ready to spend two, three million dollars in the Puna District. Be sure that the project has a low flow of traffic. Something like a storage building.

c. Developer- Tell the District Council member that we will fund one of her pet projects, like a home for the homeless or maybe a drug rehab or recovery center.

d. Developer- After the commercial zoning is complete and the zoning permits are in hand sell the property and start looking for some more land. Tell new owners that they can build about anything they want with the new zone permit.

e. Developer- Buy some more property along that highway #130 this could be a good thing for us ounce we get the first one thru the Council.

What if this scenario has some merit and our Puna people are being duped, and our Council members are being played for fools? This won’t be the first time."

"No one spoke in favor of the storage site zone change at Friday's County Council meeting except the developer and a few Council members.

County Planning Director Chris Yuen, Main Street Pahoa President Rob Tucker, community leaders Jon Olson and Kim Tavares, and Wil and Clara Nahooikaika who live next door to the property, all said it's a bad idea.

But it was approved on a 5-4 vote"

Our County Council has sent a clear message to the Puna Community Development Plan volunteers - you don't really count at all.

This is just plain old Hawaii politics. It's all about who you know or who your related too. If you don't know anyone, or your not related to anyone, you can just buy what ever you want. If you dont have those three things in your favor your just about S.O.L.

As far as the Zoning goes, is the change a complete Zoning change or just a Conditional use permit?
With the zoning change it does go with the property and makes it much more valuable. If it's just a conditional use permit they HAVE to build a storgae place and they cant flip it into "Mr Kim's Lolipops and Hard Liquor."

It's sucks that it can't be put on the ballot and let the people sort it out. Politicians are always surprised when the vote is not in their favor when the people actually voice their oppinions with votes. I know this, your money is your voice. The politicians want money, plain and simple. They will either get your money or big business money but they ARE going to get mone. Make it suck for the Council come fund raising time.

Emily Naeole's actions are consistent with her campaign commitments...

“Naeole hopes to offer tax breaks to private companies to do affordable housing. She would also like to see a "kupuna housing" project for lower Puna, to help older residents on fixed income. "What I see in Honolulu is my people living on the beaches, and it hurts my heart," she says. " and we're going to have the same thing over here." http://hawaiiislandjournal.com/2006/1021a.html
