Tiffany Edwards Hunt running for Council
#51
That's very touching, PauHana, definitely puts tears in the eyes of this Mom. As someone who had to work while my kids were growing up, not by choice but to pay rent and eat, I am one of those who missed a lot of moments.

Don't kid yourself any elected office is a double full time job. Ducking in to get a gallon of milk can take an hour when everyone stops you to say their piece. There is always something "important that has to be done right now, and some community meeting you cannot miss. Even if you work 80 hours a week and put in 100% people will say you are not doing anything, you cannot please all of the people all of the time, and you cannot please some of the people any of the time. .
Very true. I do appreciate the sacrifice and the willingness to sacrifice.

well, I could name the first 5 off the top of my head, but you got me with #6. I had to look that up. It seems he was murdered very quickly after assuming office. [:p]

Well, it seems my post was noted. I wondered if I would get Unfriended. Yes, swiftly, and not only Unfriended, Blocked.

On a personal level, it's OK and I knew it was likely if I said what was on my mind, but again, I do not see this as mature.

In the reverse situation, I would have sent an email saying "I'm sorry you feel that way." Most likely saying I would take the criticism under consideration.

I am very capable of changing my mind given some behavior that shows ability to communicate like an adult. To get into office and stay in office, it is necessary to communicate with people who make you mad, don't appreciate you, criticize you, and so forth, on an even keel.

Unfriending people is kind of juvenile, and blocking is again a sign of over-reacting. You can downgrade someone to an acquaintance and they won't see your more private posts.

A good politician doesn't burn bridges, even with people who seem unimportant to the cause.

Pure speculation, but I imagine that running for Zendo's council spot is partly a form of retaliation for whatever it was that made Tiffany so angry at him that she quit as his campaign manager.
KathyH, you are spot on when you mention her inability to take any form of criticism.
This is exactly the sort of behavior that everyone knows she exhibits and it would continue if she was elected.

Now wait for it; the long-winded blog post about how unfair and wrong everyone else is.

Ken,

Truly interested in your opinion about this. You rail against religion and have often said it'll mean a return to crapping in a hole in the ground, but Tiffany also publishes astrology forecasts which is a return to the dark ages where people crap in a hole. How to you resolve the conflict of you supporting her while she supports mediaeval superstition?

Kathy - yes, that was truly childish from Tiffany. How anyone wants to be in politics with such a thin skin is beyond me.

leilaniguy, your comment caused me to remember this BIC blog post from seven months ago, where Tiffany went after Zendo's wife based on comments she made on Damon Tucker's personal Facebook page that were not complimentary as to a sign Tiffany had donated.

http://www.bigislandchronicle.com/2013/0...-facebook/

Both Zendo and Heaukulani (Jodi) Kern ended up responding, and you can see from Zendo's comment that there is some serious bad blood. The reason he states is that she somehow came after family members and way overstepped. I do not know anything about this conflict other than what those involved have to say in this topic, and I am well aware their statements are subjective. Even so, it is an interesting read given they are now going up against each other.

The comments also include complaints about Tiffany lifting comments off a personal Facebook and using them as blog fodder, and other comments such as this being more like tabloid journalism.

My feeling is that just because it is (possibly) legal to lift comments, one should not necessarily do something merely because it is legal. One should also consider whether it shows respect to the parties involved and their intent when they made posts, IMHO.

I am linking this because Tiffany herself chose to publish it on her blog, so it is certainly fair game to look at it as part of her record, and Zendo's response was made knowing it would be public.

TomK, even though I believe astrology has somewhat transcended the medieval and even the Renaissance (meaning John Dee) at this point, I also shake my head at Tiffany's reliance on this astrologer, whom I consider to be a very poor kind of astrologer, the kind who has a whole agenda on how the future will turn out and uses astrology to (sort of) bolster the predictions. Ugh. Astrology as fortune-telling for the world scene, I think it hurts her credibility that she publishes that sort of column. Humorous astrology that admits to being newspaper astrology, can be entertaining.

All this reliance on self help books, the astrologer, sayings by various pundits, It's just personally not something I want in government. Yes, I know the Reagans did it. [:p] It's in vogue right now to publish "deep thoughts" by various know it all authorities, but I just don't subscribe to "one size fits all" type fixes to life. I prefer to think for myself, and I admire people who think and don't fall back on the Daily Quotation and how this is the "sign of the day" or whatever. It's to much like the 70's. (I loved the 70''s, but that was then and this is now.)

Is this a relevant criticism? Yes, I think that when you subscribe to the idea that you should bag any serious communications because Mercury is retrograde or if every third day you have a "moon is void of course" day, that it's counter-productive. One just has to soldier on with business no matter what Mercury is up to.

@KathyH

If you take anything I said as an insult or personal attack, well then, that's just how you think.

I seem to recall Tiffany taking quite a few bullets for you and while defending you against a certan drunk cartoonist ans his band of equally disgusting vermin.

Then those same disgusting attacks began on her.

You write a page long diatribe railing against Tiffany and then you become shocked that she unfriends you and blocks you on Facebook?

Your subsequent posts are equally degrading of Tiffany. To the point you were even have yet another issue with the astrologer she allows to post on her blog.

Rob allows "Opihikaobob" to post here. Shall we rail about that one?

Consider my words to you "relevant criticism."

@TomK

My references of our youth returning to "craping in buckets" has been related to those trying to stop TMT and that subject only.

Tiffany allowing someone to post astrology forecasts on her blog is something totally irrelevant to anything. Least of which is people returning to "crapping in buckets."

Again, Rob allows Opihikaobob to post his ramblings on his blog. Do we question where Rob's head is on that?

In fact, I do believe Tiffany has come out STRONGLY on the installation of more public toilets throughout Puna.

As for religion and my desire to see every bit of it in any form wiped off the face of this earth - I fail to see the connection of religion in all of its hateful torturous glory to that of the alignment of Earth and Mars and the moon.

@Rob

I agree Zendo is not an idiot. It sure would be nice for him to show up at something however.

This is a forum, an online community gathering place hosted by Rob. People are allowed to freely post whatever they want as long as they obey Rob's few rules. Big Island Chronicle is a print newspaper and an online blog that frames itself as journalism, complete with selling advertising. There is no comparison between Opihikaobob's self posted ramblings on a community forum and an astrology column that is printed in a "newspaper" that is published online and in print. I do think every "alternative" newspaper I've ever come across has had either a regular astrology column or a guest astrologer who wrote articles on a regular basis. It really doesn't bother me one way or another, I just wanted to clarify the difference between the Punaweb FORUM and BIC BLOG. The two are apples and oranges.

Carol - absolutely right. Punaweb is not a blog. The online version of BIC is. Rob has no control over what is posted on Punaweb although can retrospectively moderate it. The BIC is under complete control and the astrology articles are posted with Tiffany's authority. There is nothing wrong with that and I'm sure those who believe in astrology love it. But I question the support for Tiffany from those that don't want to return to the stone age but have no problem with her publishing mediaeval superstition that just ignores all our scientific achievements during the last century or so and instead supports a fraudulent, unscientific industry from the dark ages.

Well, there you have it. I would not support or vote for any politician where I had even the slightest suspicion that the nonsense of astrology would have some effect on their decision-making. Others may disagree of course.

Kathy - posting this bit separately as it doesn't have anything to do with Puna or Hawaii. Many criticisms of astrology come from the daily astrological forecasts that divide people into twelve separate groups. Astronomers often do that and I hate it when they do because I know the answer astrologers will give. However, I've spent a lot of time in the past learning what astrologers actually do. I know it's all done on birth date and time and not what sign you're born under. At least if you're a "credible" astrologer. But during that time I also learned how to give an astrological reading given anyone's birth data and my "readings" were, according to the "professional astrologers" who saw the data I used and my subsequent analysis and readings, "indistinguishable" from those of a real professional astrologer. And it's all actually very easy once you establish you can tell them where the sun and planets where at the moment of their birth. You just say something people want to hear, and if there's something wrong, you move onto something else until that person sees something they want to. Then you can say it all works.

On analysing the predictions of a professional astrologer a decade ago when it came to gold prices, I actually ended up being sued. Guess who won? It wasn't the astrologer. He was a fraud and wanted people to pay him for his services. If you'd followed his advice, you'd have lost money - not only in paying his fees, but you'd have lost money in the gold market.

So I've kept this separate so Rob can delete it easily as it has nothing to do with Puna, but at the very least, if you do see my post, I have a bit of an issue with those claiming to be "professional" astrologers and also those supporting their fraud.
