If striving for credibility is perceived as bashing... well, each to his own opinion.
But at least, Lostboystoy got an answer - finally. and I'm out of this discussion. [8D] BTW Lostboystoy, you can also edit your posts if logged in, rather than making new post corrections. Look for the pencil icon. David Ninole Resident

quote: KapohoCat - Goodness! I guess you're right! I haven't had a whole lot of time to explore those threads, but after reading some, Wow... Amazing how many people come out to fight. I hope the sentiment is there when it counts! It's all good, when new info is presented, there is often a lot of resistance to it... Yurts aren't a new idea, but they are new to many of our western cultured paradigms. I've battled that from the beginning of my business, but as Lostboy so aptly reiterates, "they've been around for hundreds of years..." something is right. Rusty, Right on! Yes, they do fantastic in colder climates, these days we can get the upgrades needed for just about any climate, thankfully. Rainy climates too, they do wonderfully here, even on the rainy side of the Big Island. Damon, thanks for the info on posting, hopefully we can all be a bit less bumbling for that advice~[] David M, I salute you on your desire to deem credibility. Absolutely. A source isn't a source until you've verified their credentials. I just want people to stop attacking my character for undefined reasons and focus on the topic at hand. My information has been straight forward, and if you ever do meet me, I believe that you will find me to be just as much of a straight forward woman as well, with major respect for my fellow human and other beings. I hope you all have one helluva day~ YurtGirl

Lostboystoy ,Rusty and everyone who is thinking to put a permitted yurt.
Just letting you know that I recommended YurtGirl's business absolutely sincere. I did my home work and the Yurts of Hawaii was mentioned to me by a very well respected engineer who deals with building department on a regular basis as a reputable business.I was criticizing only the way the information was presented.I stand by what I said on that subject. But if you really want to permit, please do use a professional.Yurts of Hawaii is one of them. Here is why I called yurt construction a "mine field". And here is why I do recommend Yurts of Hawaii for permitting yurts. Attached are: 1.The personal e-mail to me from BESIGNS,the City-Data.com(Hawaii) forum member.(She posted the facts on that forum. The e-mail has important details). 2. YurtGirl's response on Besigns post, help offered. Plesase, note that BESIGNS has personal experience living in yurts and loves them. ************************************************************************ 1. BESIGNS wrote: " It was a learning lesson, the yurt experience for my husband and I. We paid a design and drafting service a bit over $3000 to assure us that we could build our pacific yurt home and get a permit for it. We even had a signed binding contract. The yurt was denied time and time again by the building dept. I hope you are not working with Accent Design Company to get your drawings because they are the company we basically in my opinion donated $3000+ to in order for this whole ordeal to blow up for us. We were confidently assured that they could get us a permit, "NO problem..." we paid and then a year later were stuck with the 2 beautiful yurts sitting under a car port on our property ... Well as i have told you we were never given a permit. The building dept claimed it was not to code and basically classified it as a glorified tent. We were able to sell the 30' and 16'yurts we had purchased and move on. I know that the yurt is a wonderful structure to live in. My brother in law is still living in the 24 ft pacific yurt . The yurt is 12 years old by now and still in good condition." ********************************************************************* 2. YurtGirl : "I am sorry for your problems there. We had some issues as well when we first started the business, it seemed there was one person in the building department who arbitrarily refused to permit yurts, and he just happened to be the one that most residential permits would filter through. However, after many meetings and a lot of digging, we discovered that the building departments policy on permitting yurts is that they ARE permittable. As long as they have 2 doors (as the latticework walls don't allow for openable windows as a rule), 7' walls and a few other requirements. We can assist in this process even after the fact, but as you have already sold..." (02/21/08-City-Data.com,Hawaii) P.S.I agree that the yurts are wonderful inside, could be even fancy if you invest enough.I still think there is one feature the regular house can not compete-portability.(In case of the lava coming...) I've chosen the regular structure because it is less expensive in the long run (insurance , parts replacement and shipping). I might be wrong. And your experience could be different. Lostboystoy, Rusty, good luck to you in your venture. If you get the yurt, please share your experience. I sincerely wish you luck.

I would come back to the same thing, and say it again.
If you're going to get yourself into something of dubious permitting, or something you might want to "as build" permit in the future, you will be able to build a wooden stick built structure of similar size and more usable space for less money than you can purchase a yurt. The wooden structure with a proper roof will outlast your lifetime, and if you're interested in ecology, you'll grow enough koa around the place to completely redo it in the mean time. If you want to live in a yurt, power to you. I don't believe you should be prohibited from doing so. As it's small, it's a more benign and cost effective option than what many do. It is, however, not the the most benign and cost effective option. But as they're doing everything they can to outlaw ecological building as fast as they can, you must make your personal deal with the devil.

JW,I only brought it up because the other thread on yurts resurfaced.

The debate needs to be enforced and everyone is dancing around it.
Either structures under 400+/- square feet that meet basic requirement for sanitation should be exempt from other obstructions and elsewise. . .write it into law, or write it out. As it is, a quarter of Hawaii lives in a quasi legal status. Or quit pretending that any one cares about the environment and just build big McMansions in gated communities. That's the mainland way. As it is, McMansions are cheaper to build, per square foot, and there are no requirement for sanitation as long as it's all permitted! It makes no difference if your septic tank actually works, it's all about the stamp. You can grub grade denude or hell with all, simply if you can afford it. Nothing prevents you. You must simply pay the fee. This is the statis quo, at the moment. Worst of all worlds. Unless you're a developer with no ethics. |
