They make sense for health care workers. Not for you or me. Not so hard to understand.
But don't believe the WHO or the CDC, believe some guy on Punaweb or facebook.

Yeah don’t stop to consider what makes sense yourself? Automatically refute it if someone on punaweb says something? Interesting response Paul, I wonder why you even bother to contribute here if that is your attitude. By the same logic wouldn’t any of your contributions be equally worthless?

There's a lot of double-speak in the statements about masks for sure. Surgical masks (the thin, light-weight masks) aren't going to help much to prevent catching a virus - however, they do help reduce you from spreading germs you may have, even if you are asymptomatic but infectious.
N95 (and above) respirators (heavy duty, tight fitting) are much more effective in preventing catching and transmitting any viruses IF they are fitted well and handled properly (which often takes training, pratice, and prep such as shaving for men).
However, staying out of public is the most effective means of reducing the catching or spreading of any disease (work at home, shop very rarely and off hours, etc)
But don't trust another guy on Punaweb - here is one of many articles with infectious disease experts that make the same distinctions.

That cruise ship that was in Hilo on Saturday is looking more worrisome - few dozen individuals now showing symptoms while it slowly approaches San Fran waiting for tests kits to be flown out to them.

If people post nonsense on Punaweb I will try to counter it. Sorry if you'd rather see nonsense go unchallenged.
I'm glad to see the stupid conspiracy theories got shut down. Every time...

Exactly my point. Don't trust me, read the links. The US Surgeon general says "DON'T BUY MASKS!" (their caps, not mine) so people better have some good arguments (and links) if they want to advise the exact opposite. Life would be easier if people tried to behave just a bit more rationally.
Still no cases on the Big Island? Hilo Walmart must be nervous though after that cruise ship story.

The surgeon general tweeted “Seriously people- STOP BUYING MASKS! They are NOT effective in preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!”
There is a shortage of masks, even the tweet touches on that as fact. I think that’s a valid reason not to stockpile masks when the medical community might have an immediate use for the masks.
My problem with this is the insinuation that masks wouldn’t be useful in preventing virus transmission (clearly depending on the type of mask and it’s proper use there is variety) then the direct opposite statement that they are useful so doctors need them...
It’s a well documented medical fact that the right type of mask is necessary to prevent transmission of disease - that’s why the tweet also indicates they will be necessary for medical staff.
I’m just pointing out the juxtaposition of these two statements and the implied cognitive dissonance.

Don’t worry about Paul rainyjim. This is the same guy who says people are stupid for reporting crimes to the police when you have a description of the perps because the bad guys will just change their clothes making finding them impossible........
Yup, the same guy who calls people stupid for wiping down their armrests on airplanes and using hand sanitizers when traveling. The reason? Because Paul is “rational” and uses “common sense” and we are all stupid.
Remember, this is the same guy who said this covid nonsense was nothing and we should be much more concerned with the flu. I wonder how that fictional trip to “Asia” went? You remember the trip to Asia Paul scheduled right in the middle of the outbreak to convince us all there was nothing to worry about?
So learn from our expert in criminal justice and infectious disease. Don’t report crimes, don’t practice simple hygiene. Use common sense and be rational!

Medical workers MUST work among the sick & injured, some who will have COVID-19. Physicians & nurses heal us, and if they show up for work it requires they don’t unduly expose themselves to illness, or spread sickness among their patients.
The guy who has five boxes of masks stockpiled in his closet because he refuses to change his lifestyle, and thinks he needs a mask for a malasada run when the mood strikes him, does have the option to stay home. Without using a mask. A mask that would then be available for medical professionals if it hadn’t been removed from the supply chain.

Yeah, that’s why I think it’s reasonable to ask the public not to hoard masks at this juncture. I just think it’s Orwellian to then claim they aren’t even beneficial and that they are beneficial in the next breath. Not saying anyone on punaweb has said this - talking about the surgeon general.
If people post nonsense on Punaweb I will try to counter it.
OMG, what a silly little man. Paul, you really need a vacation. Have you considered Asia? I hear China is wonderful this time of year.
Dude, why don't you just stick to posting your opinions and leave it at that? Trying to convince others that you are the voice of reason is a task that even you are not up to. People, everyone, including you (seriously Paul) make fools of themselves now and then. I can recount many of your blunders that have been the source of entertainment for a lot of us over the years. To say otherwise is just folly.
Yeah yeah yeah, you're gonna set us right. Sure brah.

The surgeon general is a political appointee, nothing more. He does not want masks diverted from healthcare workers because the government failed to prepare for the pandemic by stockpiling enough masks ahead of the crisis. They also do not want people wearing masks in public because it's a visible reminder of the government's failure and it may create a panic that leads to looting and social disorder that could be more harmful than the virus itself.
Anybody who takes medical advice from a politician does so at their own peril.
