#61
I thought littering was already illegal? I bet new laws that make littering illegal will fix things right up....[Big Grin]

Jon, it's not just littering. Everyone who deals with solid waste managment says plastic bags become airborne so easily, it's their #1 problem. They just can't contain it. You see plastic bags blowing all around landfills even though they are being properly disposed of. Our local health food store has a recycling bin and even with that, these bags sometimes blow away as people are putting them in the bin and they are a half mile away before you know it. they are the cockaroach of solid waste.

Don't need a new law on littering. Just make sure that the one on the books has enough teeth to HURT when caught littering. Many places in the world have littering fines in the hundreds of dollars. No money to pay the fine, community service picking up litter on the roadways and beaches. Demeaning, I sure hope so

a stiff fine for illegal disposal of any plastic bags in your possession, ie. leaving the damn things on the beach or in parking lots full of dirty diapers or dog droppings. beverage cans only in cardboard cartons, no plastic rings. .25 cent deposit on beverage cans. Just for starters.

This is what I as talking about...

I under stand you Plastic Bag concern, I don't agree with the method being tried to solve the problem, but I understand the issue.

I have seen some ideas on dealing with trash and waste over the years.... and it always comes down to laws, lets take some more rights away, that way we can feel better.

its working so well all over the world, lets do it here.

Here is one for you... how about we let any store that does not use plastic bags keep 1% of the sales tax they collect? I bet you don't see another plastic bag on the island again. nothing is made illegal, no rights are removed. business gets to make a little money, State learns to do without a little... everyone wins.

What I meant there, Jon, was that there will be some who go "thats demeaning to make someone pickup trash because they can't pay the fine" TS, If you don't want to feel demeaned picking up trash from other morons like yourself, don't litter. If it was up to me, I'd make them wear a pink jumpsuit for safety as they work. Won't want them to be in danger for being hit by a vehicle.

You haven't had much experience with our State government, have you?

Don't get me wrong. I actually LIKE the idea. I just know that anything the threatens even a tiny bit of the money stream to the State bureaucracy will get the deep six post haste.

Cheers,
