A bill to raise the speed limit on Saddle Road

I pass as often as I am passed, but am typically tailgated coming down Saddle Road into Hilo. Typically I"m going 45, the speed limit is 35, and somebody is 3 inches off my rear bumper. It's dark with lots of curves, so I can't see a good place to pull over until I'm almost on top of it... which means braking hard, which a cannot do because of the idiot 3 inches behind me. If I slow down enough to pull over safely, the guy behind me gets pissed off. If I don't pull over, he gets pissed off. If I go faster, we all die.

If you are unable to navigate the simple process involving signaling, slowing and pulling over then perhaps it is time to turn in your license.

KJ,
You aren't serious are you?

Lodestone is talking about a narrow winding road with no shoulder much of the time, no reflectors or striping much of the time, and no turnouts to pull over into, in the dark no less, and you don't understand why having some clueless jerk tailgating 3" off the back bumper might make pulling over less than a "simple process?" That whole stretch is downhill all the way, you must have more faith in other people's brakes and powers of observation than I do.

I think you just like to dig through PW looking for a place you can interject an insult.

I generally do signal and edge over on the other parts of Saddle Road, but on the stretch I'm talking about, it's downhill, curvy, night-time, and frequently foggy and raining. When it's night, I really don't know if the shoulder is OK or a muddy cliff. I pull over anyway, because it beats being tailgated. But, I'm not always happy about it.

The point I'm trying (and failing) to make is that tailgating super-close is counterproductive because makes it difficult for the lead car to pull over. I have to brake to pull over; but I'm afraid to brake, because the car is following too closely. Give me a car-length or two, that's all I ask.

I doubt anyone is 3 inches off of ones bumper...nor 3 feet...

Point taken, I exaggerated for effect.

Look, I've gotten my share of speeding tickets in my life. Maybe the rules are different here... is driving 45 MPH in a 35 MPH zone (in crappy conditions) not fast enough?

...now that I think about, I don't enjoy staring into my rear view mirror and trying to gauge how far away the tailgater is when I should be looking at the highway ahead.

A tip for CHILL-laxing... we listen to podcasts or audiobooks on long trips. It makes for much more enjoyable (and safe) drive.

"I drive 5 under most of the time, but find it amusing when idiots think they can try and push me out of the way. "

I seldom find a need to drive under the speed limit, but when I do, I pull over to let others pass safely.

According to http://westhawaiitoday.com/news/local-ne...addle-road the speed limit was supposed to be raised by Jan 1.

Anybody drive the last 3 days can report if it was raised??

Neither local paper was clear on this point, but the implication is that the speed limit isn't really 60 until the signs are actually installed, DOT thinks this will happen in February.

80 is a good speed limit until you get to the ghost town of the military base... then reduce down to 65.
