Volcano Acting Up #2

Uh, 25%, I'm pretty sure.[8D]

The HVO update page has some pretty spectacular still images, I can't imagine what it would be like sitting at the end of the road at Kalapana, at night. Prayers to Madame Pele that nobody gets hurt out of this.

I envy you your front row seat, Daniel.

Aloha! ;-)

Jayne and I went out last Wed night. I can't tell you what a once in a life time view we got! It looked like the entire RG was on fire and the lava was all the way down to about the parking area elevation. Kalapana was a mad house with to many cars and fans of Pele. Thank god I had the P U truck because many times I had to go off the road to avoid the mustangs with their tops down if you know what I mean.
I heard they have it blocked off now which is really unfair to us.
If they regulate the flow of cars in and out they could keep it open.
But, what are the chances of that?
If you do get the chance get out there.

Hmmmmmm.... let me guess? People who dont have HDL? ha ha ha.

We were out there last night. It was awesome.

I advocate a tailgate dinner at sunset. Suggestions - park off edge of road - leave plenty of room for an emergency vehicle to get through. HPD came down last night - made a swing through - and on its way. Everyone was very polite!

I went out last Friday and hiked into Royal Gardens. It was totally amazing. About 20 people were hanging out where the road was cut off by some cooling a'a. Getting back was a challenge in the dark with our too weak LED flashlights, but we managed. It was about an hour each way and we started at 5:45. I'm tempted to do it again this week. Best lava viewing since my hike into Pu'u O'o.

Just got back. Parked at the end of the road and walked ten minutes to the leading edge of the pahoehoe flow. WOW! Flow will probably cover the parking area before morning. The flow was creeping along about 5'/minute. Very cool. Well...

Police were there to make sure that the road was clear for an evacuating resident. I think that he just put in a cinder drive this year. He was getting ready to pull out his mobile home.

Cops said that after he was out, so were they, unless they received orders to close the road. besides that everyone was on their own. I was pleased to hear that.

I would say that the flow should reach the ocean by this weekend. I would like to see that one.

Aloha Daniel...hey do you think we need to have a 4-wheel to get in to see the lava? Would it be hard on our little Toyota pickup?

Carrie,

No problem. Now is a good time if the road has not been closed off by now. Wish I could go now

Today's update says that the flow is 300-1000' wide just 1500 feet from the road.

http://volcano.wr.usgs.gov/kilaueastatus.php

'HVO geologists mapped an unusually rapid flow advancing across the coastal plain from the base of the Royal Gardens subdivision. At 11 pm last night, the 100-300 m (300-1,000 ft) wide flow was approximately 450 m (1,500 ft) from the County road turn-around point.'
