Puna Makai Alternate route
#81
Could it have been Joan Blackshear, the late Roy Blackshear's daughter? Link:

I got a kick out of Kelena's discription of the Lady at Shipman Beach. I have also talked to her and she is colorful. She told me she loves to snorkle at Vacation Land and goes to the lava flows fairly often so she must like some things about Puna.

She was like you discribed her in many ways and I think she would get a chuckle if she read your discription. I am sure it would distress her if she offended you about Orchidland. I know she feels concern for the drugs and things she has seen that affect the children of Puna.

Is Kelena some kind of a well known local person?
And why some people say "no Mrs.Shipman?"

Not famous and not local. Locally infamous, perhaps. How I ended up in a van with Goldie Hawn headed for Francis Ford Coppola's house in the French Quarter is another story. With Goldie what you see on the screen is exactly what you get. We are not friends and I do not travel in those circles.

Anyway, Mrs. "Shipman" is on the Puna makai alternate route and she added to my experience. We will never forget her. My friend and I still replay that conversation.

At times, I have to wonder along with Mrs. "Shipman", who are these rude, ill-mannered interlopers?

Why "there is no Mrs.Shipman"?

Well, without knowing specific facts I would suggest that Shipman is an old family name dating back a century and a half or so. Marriages can gradually bring new names into the family until the original name "Shipman" survives as primarily the masthead of the family tree.

Quite likely in one or more generations there were no sons, there were daughters.
Assume the best and ask questions.

The last "Mrs. Shipman" I knew was Joan Blackshear; Married to Roy Blackshear, son of a Shipman woman who changed her name through marriage. Don't know who runs the estate now, but if there is an imposter in Kea'au, someone should call the authorities! [Wink]

Joan Blackshear is the daughter of Roy Blackshear.

I think you're right wax. After consulting my wife, who worked with the Blackshears at the Lyman Museum I think Roy's wife was Jackie Blackshear. This was ten or fifteen years ago and my memory chips are somewhat corrupted. Thanks for the clarification.
