Four days ago, someone here posted:
quote For what it’s worth, from my sister: A neighbor just called me who knows a lawyer at White House meeting today.....she said stuff may happen with banks so make sure have full tank of gas and large ants of cash on hand. May have something to do with ability to use credit cards. unquote Please, people, you are not helping anyone by passing on these baseless rumors. We know you mean well but it does not help. It just leads to more hoarding and panic buying. Just don't. Thank you.

...baseless rumors...
Just don’t. I wrote that. You edited out the part of my post that said: I would think in a crisis credit cards would be the preferred method for transactions rather than money, it’s certainly cleaner. So I don’t fully understand the implications of a restriction (if there is one.) In any case, fill up your gas tank, that’s a good idea. I said I didn’t necessarily buy into it. As far as baseless, my sister is neighbors with one of the many former White House Chief of Staffs. She knows people with connections to the West Wing. I asked her over the weekend whether she had any more info or updates on her original comment, and she said nothing further has been mentioned. I’m sure there are a million ideas getting tossed around in the Administration right now. Some make it out the door into Rose Garden press briefings, others are tossed in the can or placed on the back burner. I don’t know which applies to the comment in my post. But your description that it was a baseless does not. It was a rumor yes, and I clearly stated it as such. Given the source I felt it was worth posting, even if such a policy had not been officially implemented.

Please don't take that as a personal attack HOTPE, you are one of the good guys on Punaweb.
I read this article in the NYT this morning and it reminded me of your post: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/16/us/co...ntine.html Someone passing on inside information from their sister's neighbor's lawyer sounds a lot like part of the "infodemic" to me. Especially when it turned out to be false.

Well, I for one appreciate the back-channel info HOTPE as it gives some idea of the possibilities involved. As we know in 2008, the financial system was literally days away from credit cards not working so having enough cash on hand to weather such an event makes sense to me.
Someone on the West Coast mentioned to me over the weekend that they had heard Amazon might not be able to fulfill all of its orders coming up in the next week. That led me to throwing in several last minute items that would be nice to have and are now on their way. If he was wrong, I would just end up with things I wanted anyway but just didn't have an immediate need. As he was right, I ended up with things I wanted, that are now very difficult to get. So win-win?

baseless rumors...
Hey Mr Edge.. I appreciated your posts, the way you were clear of it's source, and would suggest you not be discouraged from sharing your thoughts and concerns in the future.

Do I really need to explain why posting rumors is bad?
What if someone said that gas supplies will be stopped shortly and so everyone goes out and buys up as much gas as they can? Some will end up with too much and most will end up with nothing. Is that a win-win? I know people mean well but please don't spread rumors. Thanks for not doing so, ironyak.

Ige is an indecisive coward, refusing to take proactive measures like restricting dining in restaurants or drinking in bars even as other states do and the CDC recommends no one gather in groups of more than 10. He has failed us again and again, and I hope his indecisiveness and failures are immortalized in a monument as a lesson to future generations. I hope we don't see hundreds of elderly dying because he wanted to "wait and see".

Cash or Card is assuming that people will still accept dollars in trade. If your hoarding 10,000 gallons of gas, you may want to sell some of it for real items like silver coins or other tangible items. Like toilet paper.. that seems to be a real hot item nowadays.
Barter is quite popular on the island anyway. its not a far stretch.

Interesting..
National Headline (CNN): US cities shut down to slow outbreak Local Headline (Trib): Kim doesn’t want to shutter county Which is the better approach? I would think the sooner, and more severely, we respond the sooner we get to the back side of this. Am I wrong? Does Harry know something I don't? Or, by chance, is he risking greater, and longer, exposure with his policies? |
