No Ocean Entry Yet, Surface Flows in Royal Gardens
#41
Tom,

Someone on island can give you better answer to your question. However, more generally speaking, Kilauea may just come to you! The flow is on the pali (several flows actually) and is very active. This takes us back to Fall of 2007.

Best view from the parking lot at the county viewing area and along the Kalapana access road.

The last couple of nights there has been a lot of lava along the top of the Pali, but it stalls before making any significant descent. The tube to Waikupanaha has been empty for a couple of weeks now, and many think that the longer it stays empty the greater the chance it won't refill.

In my lay opinion; change is coming, which is exciting in itself.

Daniel is right about the best viewing from Puna Makai.

Yes, Greg. I agree with you. There is a transition of some kind in place. Strictly speaking, I guess that transition has been taking place since late 2007.

TomK, just to be clear, the county viewing area (and parking lot) are at the end of Highway 130. Coming from Hilo, just go past HPP till you get to the end of the (H130) road, which is at Kalapana.

Chain of Craters Road is in Volcano National Park. That's where you used to be able to see lava flows, a few years ago. It's shifted east.

Thanks Daniel and Greg. Paul, no need for directions, I've lived in Puna a few years now but appreciate your intention! I just haven't been to the viewing area for some time nor to the park due to work and other issues. When people mentioned the pali I just wasn't sure whereabouts on the pali they meant.

Thanks again.

Can anyone provide me with a link to view a map of the areas and flows you're talking about? Like the scary 2007 flow Glen has referenced. Carey??? Thank you in advance. Ann

Enjoy the day! Ann

Here is one map. I believe the pali being discussed in at the top of Royal Gardens. I'm sure if this is not correct someone will let us know!
