My take on this is more like DanielP's: I came from a very rural place in northernmost Idaho and I do miss the laid-back, country feeling we used to have.

I miss the quiet, open spaces. ~ We hear the noise from Kahakai Blvd & the renters across the street. Not used to that.

I miss my old flower-vegie-herb garden of 30 years, and the lilac hedge I planted from little sticks in the ground. It grew to 10 feet tall, thick & lush & full of blooms in the springtime and bird nests all summer. I miss the springtime bulbs. ~ I'm still learning to garden here, with varying success. It's fun and it's frustrating, both.

I miss seeing hawks & eagles soaring above, elk & deer grazing at dusk. ~ It took a year or so to stop looking out the window for a glimpse, but we are delighted to have a family of I'o out back!

Obvious to those who know me, I miss my kids. No way around that. I would be missing them wherever we lived; they grew up, dang it! I miss the grandkiddos, too.

I miss our excellent little bookstore.

I don't miss the -20 temps, or the 100+ temps in the summertime.

I don't miss the lack of fresh foodstuffs year-round.

I don't miss being so far from the ocean.

I don't miss looking over my shoulder for cougars or grizz.

I don't miss the small-mindedness of a very small town & county.

All in all, I wouldn't go back, but we do keep our eyes open for a quieter spot here.

aloha, Liz

There's just too many good things about Hawai'i that I love to mention. There are so few things on the mainland that I miss. I do miss the variety and the low prices of wood for my woodshop, or the selection of nice glass for doing any stained glass work. Of the few things that I miss, the biggest is affordable shipping from one state to the other. I'm tired of hearing "Hawai'i isn't part of the US!"

PS. So Dan, I take it you won't be coming to Scuba Sunday?? LOL!

hmm. we moved from kailua, o'ahu. people might think that we can't relate to this topic. the list is short, but here it is:

missing: 1) good restaurant food 2) shopping at the mall.

not missing: 1) traffic 2) noise

maybe you bumped into renee? she was a shuttle bus driver for dollar rent a car for 6 or 7 years. she didn't have a lot of energy, though--was her mother's primary caregiver for as many years, but did enjoy talking with everyone.

things that we have come to appreciate here on the BI:

1. slower pace
2. inner peace
3. friends that we've met here
4. starlit skies so bright and breathtaking
5. exploring
6. the whales, dolphins and turtles

life is good...........

OMG!

Macuu- This I think is a no brainer, I'd give up Olive Garden and Sizzler in a heartbeat for Huli Huli Chicken, and a Peaberry Kona coffee every morming, also give up the mailand for as Robguz said for 3/$1.00 Papayas instead of 1/$3.00

KeaauRich- I think Da Kine "Super Sweet" corn you can get at the little farmers market there in Keaau rivals many corns from even the cornbelt. Just MHO ;-)

fact is I'd give up most things here in Northern CA for a chance to live permanently in HPP, where my heart and soul resided if not the body ;-)

Things I don't miss are traffic of course (and especially that 405 past Mulholland Drive in either direction!), pollution - I swear it was just awful in Arizona AND in Los Angeles 20 years ago it was bad!!

I DO miss carne asada burritos from our favorite local place in Arizona;

Riding my Harley in Sedona, Arizona (I let it go before we moved here);

I can live without Olive Garden but sure do think about it sometimes (the salad and breadsticks...yum); and

Our kids.

I guess you haven't been here long enough, we used to have a Sizzler in Kona, they just didn't make it! It used to be in the parking lot of KTA on Palani Road.
