Abe-can't wait to see you guys play! My wife is Heather from an earlier post and I was once the "Jerry" in a dead cover band, and many other jam type bands. It's been way too long since I've seen live music so keep us posted about any shows. Also love reading about all the old stories here.

For those of you who remember the hippy daze, there's a wonderful book of photos called Mendocino in the 70's by photographer Nick Wilson. I don't know if Puna was ever like this, but it was a wonderful time for first steps towards getting back to the land. A more hedonistic time than now, more innocent, not cynical. The book has an online widget where you can flip the pages and see it all online. I think it's pretty great, but then I know most of the people so I'm biased. Seriously, these are rare photos of the days when people got a flatbed truck, a generator, made the truck a stage, and set up to boogie in some meadow in the redwoods. Stuff that never made the news like Woodstock did.

Hehe, Kathy,

Thanks for sharing. Last year we went over to Kona and saw a couple of shows of The David Nelson Band. David Gans was there. The scene was like the 60's and 70's of Avalon, Carousel, and Winterland, The Greek, except it was all old Hippies, like us. The scene was so nostalgic I was drooling. Pakalolo drifting through the air, everyone swaying to the music. Very laid back. I will look for that every year. I understand that they also played at Akebono, but the outdoor scene is more my thing.

Peace and Love, Dan

good stories Kathy...when my wife and I moved to Puna we used this site some to learn about the area, get Puna akamai, but I found myself getting irritated by some and just quit...no sense....but I always appreciated your viewpoint...now I know why....oh btw I helped construct the scaffold for the wall of sound at Iowa State fairgrounds,,i think it was 74.....good fun..

Hey Mauka-
I saw them at Woodstock, too! We should reminisce sometime!
I'm part of Abe's cover band, we are looking for a venue slightly less ambitious then Hilo Civic. Any suggestions?
I saw Jerry at Hilo Civic, the only time I saw him perform in shorts!

What a massive structure that Wall of Sound was, huh? You're a part of rock and roll history then! In '74, Richie was still with them. Maybe you met him. Here's an interview with him about the Wall of Sound done in 2007:

And a very cool interview with Dan Healy, designer of the system, talks about the wall and his long friendship with Jerry.

Luke's Place in Hawi could be another venue for the cover band. Punatics could take over the Kohala Village Inn for the night. [Big Grin]

thanks Kathy..aloha..i will read at home, it's blocked out here,,it would be really cool if these guys get going, some sort of regular so word could spread etc..Anna Banana's in Honolulu had Palolo Jones , like every other Friday, it was so fun to see old friends, meet new ones, and know for certain you could dance your ass off..Stephen Inglis was lead guitar and quite special, he is now doing acoustic and solo..too bad for us rockers(Dead Heads) , but good for him...BK started "House of Spirits" (played in Kona) with Stephen on lead guitar...
