Debt Fiscal Crisis Brief -7-27-10
#31
I think what might be missing now are the "animal spirits" which maybe can't really measure. My theory is things might improve after the elections in November if the mass psychology improves as much a new policy direction. Gotta make sure I don't end up a statistic in the legal notices??

Other people want to make friends- I just want to make money.

I would still like you all to bring this back to Hawaiian terms. Abstract examinations of the world are interesting sometimes but Punaweb needs to deal with things from a Puna and Hawaiian point of view. It isn't that hard to do actually.

Bring it home.

Mahalo,

It's not that hard. How about aggressively supporting local businesses? Press politically for the county to develop local business parks with business incubators for local start-ups? The first three years are the most deadly for young companies. A mentor program for local businesses?

Puna is nicely positioned for small manufacturing for a Oahu market. Our land is cheap. Low rents compared to Hono. We should have some local furniture manufacturing. Recycled content product manufacturing. Jobs.

Lots and lots of way to address the issues without just churning theories of what goes wrong. We gotta work on things that are right for an island economy. I mean work.

Kathy, there is no true supply and demand. Prices are manipulated by speculators so price does not correlate. For example, wheat prices in 2008 rose to extreme heights even though the world produced records amounts of wheat.
I hear you. I wasn't trying to say that price is always a factor of supply and demand, or that price necessarily reflects value.

I appreciate your sharing that you have a degree in economics. I had noticed that your comments were well thought out. [Smile] Re economics: I have it in my blood somewhat, as one grandfather was a professor of economics. Alas, I did not inherit a love of business from him, and I never applied myself to the subject, beyond the one class, but I'm becoming more interested these days and doing some reading.

Rob, I do apologize, I knew the topic was barely anchored in Puna. I'm interested in the housing market crisis. It certainly is affecting Hawai'i in a big way, but I'm not sure how to speak of it in terms that relate only to Hawai'i.

Good luck with your interference effort. How many outlets does KFC or BK have? You may have interference with your interference as people line up to buy a bucket or a burger and don't want to be interfered with.

I think it's a tough sell to old timers that they have to buy from Hawai'i based businesses. After all, Hawaii business was controlled by an oligarchy for many years, and the coming of mainland businesses represented choice. To many, the days of only local business were times of price gouging. If they now choose to buy from Burger King, that's their right. We all have rights to choices. A local business can get a following if it makes a better product; we don't need protests.

Here's a partial solution for banksters stealing everything: raise the homeowner's exemption along with the residential tax rate so homeowners pay less while the tax burden shifts to the banks that are holding the empty houses.

What sort of "interference"? Non-violent and non-destructive I hope.

Banks don't get a homeowner exemption. The exemption is only for those who live in the home and claim it as their primary residence.

Hahaha. You are funny. All you need to achieve your goal is another hundred million or so of similar persuasion. You want to do away with capitalism and are going to start with the Burger King at the Woodland Center in Pahoa? Good luck with your interference campaign.

There are co-ops now and nothing to prevent more of them.
