Victimized papaya farmer still suffering.

I was incensed when I heard about this to.

But then I heard that this may be more than just senceless vandalism.

What I heard is that these papayas were GMO or genetically modified.
And that GMO papayas can spread to non genetically modified fields turning all papayas in the area to GMO's.
To me that made more sence that it was an organized effort to eradicate the GMO payayas than just an act of vandalism.

Anyone else have thoughts on this theory?

Oh, well, that's okay then?

Most papayas in Hawaii are GMO, you want to destroy them all?

There is no excuse for vandalizing other people's property, none.

The GMO idea is doubtful, IMHO.
First, there are lots more fields with GMO papayas and they have not been bothered.
Also, such public statements as attacking GMO would more likely be taken credit for and these vandals have not claimed credit.

Thanks every one for all your great thoughts. I told Mr. Julian that we have great neighbors in Puna. I like the Huli-Huli Chicken idea. Seem like less organizing than a garage sale. Keep the suggestions, and any offers for help coming.
My first thought was vandalism but as mentioned, no one took any credit for it. Mr. Julian's brother was a papaya farmer a few years ago and lost 300 trees in a very similar attack. He gave up farming and now has a water hauling business. Mr. Julian is still sure that it is a jealous rival.
I'm not crazy about GMO's but I understand the pressure on a farmer to use them.

If a fundraiser gets organized, make sure to contact the newspapers and ask them to do a follow up their vandalism story and have them include information on the fundraiser. Hopefully it'll get more people involved.

I must say Jim finally something good. It is this kind of goodness that makes a diffrence. Thank you for reminding me to keep caring..

Yeah...in a perfect world.

Are we still talking about vandalism?

I can't help but try to make sense out of the senseless.

It's just my nature.

I still find it hard to believe someone would destroy 8K plants just for the sick fun of it..

I mean it just takes too much effort with no benifit to the perpertrator other than getting rid of the competition...???

The question is still why???

What's the motive?

It took some real effort and labor to hack down that many trees.

Funkstopper,
Do you think it would be possible for Kitv and the newspapers to do a follow up on this story about what the family is going through. Possibly an account could be set up at one of the Banks, for people who wanted to donate?
Huli Huli fundraiser also sounds like a great idea.

I am on board for whatever activity is chosen, though not in a role of leadership. Plate is a bit full just now. Keep us all posted.
