pay for your business links (advertising) on PW

In addition to donating money through paypal to support PW, I think those folks who have links on every PW post to their business are advertising. This takes up a lot of screen space (I have an ipad).
I would rather have an ad free PW, which was Rob's intent.

However, some long time members have been free-loading off PW for years posting several lines under their names with links to promote their businesses.
This advertising on PW. If you are going to continue with this, pay for the use of the advert space.
What do you think, Rob? I would love to have no adverts and links and several advert lines under names. OR Charge Them For This Free Service They Are Using.

Anyone else think this is not ok on an advert-free blog?

Orchidlandguy,

I am obviously one of the people that you are referring to here. Just for the record I am in no way offended and my posting here is not meant in any way to offend or for any kind of retribution. I really just want to let you know some facts about this.

First I am sorry my signature adds 9 extra lines to each post I publish. Most forums allow the use of signatures. This is where my links are posted. Everytime I post, the forum software adds my signature which I configured through the user control panel. Everyone has access to this and can do the same thing as I do. It is common practice throughout the Internet to place personal webpage links in ones signature. The administrator can remove this feature from the board anytime he feels like. I made sure that before I placed any links in the signature that I was not violating any rules against it. But since it is allowed here and commercial website links are allowed I am well within the rules.

I am not sure how long I have been a member here but I believe it is going on 4-5 years. I sometimes go many months without posting here. And I have had either 2 or 3 websites in my signature during that time. I keep a close eye on how many people visit my sites from PW based on the links in my signature. So first I want to say that 2 of my 3 website links are "FREE" sites. There is no paid for advertising on either one. However, on the Kona Forum I do have my own advertising and I have free advertising (advertising friend's sites) and I have Google Ads as well. In the 5+ years I have had the Google ads on this site I have made exactly $100.00 total and nothing in the last two years. So technically make nothing from the site. The Kau Web does not have any advertising whatsoever. And the last site is my web hosting business. With all this said The Kona Forum gets 9-10 unique visitors a month from the Punaweb if I post anything here during any month. Considering I get thousands of unique visitors and 10's of thousands of visits a month to this site 9 or 10 is negligeble. The same goes for the Kau Web. I get an average of 12-15 unique visitors to this site if I post here in any month. However, since John mentioned the Kau Web here in the Punaweb the number of visitors and visits has increased substancially. All those years of having the link in my signature and no one even noticed until John mentioned it in a post. And after all these years, until this month I have gotten ZERO yes ZERO unique visitors to my hosting business site from Punaweb. This month so far I have received 6 unique visitors from Punaweb. And today I received my first new customer (THANKS PETE!!!) that I can attribute directly to the Punaweb. BTW, I sell web hosting for $3.00/month. So it is not like I make a killing in this business.

So would it worth paying for advertising FREE sites in ones signature? Nope. Would it be worth my paying for advertising my business site in my signature? No to that as well. If Rob were to change his mind and want to charge for advertising business sites in ones signature I would remove the one link and replace it with another link to another one of my "FREE" sites. If he wants to eliminate signatures altogether he can do it as the admin of this board. There is nothing I can do about that.

I do benefit slightly in other ways (not monetarily) from placing the links in my signature but I have typed enough in this post so I won't go on. Just thought you might be interested in some facts.

One 'imported' real estate person adds a lot to this forum for free that way more than pays for his 'advertising' signature block.
Likewise for another construction industry person who well more than pays for her 'advertising'.
I am glad they participate and have absolutely no objections to their 'advertising'.
Thanks for your time and effort in providing this forum Rob.

It might even be cool to highlight a local business once a month or so if someone wanted to take the time. I would find that informative and interesting. Start with members businesses first. Maybe even by the business owners themselves. Limit it to once a month or quarter per business or whatever if its a self promotion thing. Just thinking.

I think we are so used to the old media thinking about paying by the column inch that it influences how we think about new media like the internet. It really costs no more for Rob if someone has a big "signature" on their post, but the time he spends playing middle school hall monitor has real costs for him in terms of time and energy diverted from running his business and taking care of his family.

If people are really concerned about "costs" to Punaweb they should make real conscious ongoing efforts to not create those kinds of "costs" to Rob for this volunteer effort.

This web site has been run by Rob very well since about 2004. Why is it that people want to change what is his own creation? Who are you people that have come to this site only to bitch and moan about it? If you're not happy with the way something is run here PLEASE move on to another web site or start your own and run it the way YOU want it. Crap, it's just like those of you that move here then piss and moan about changing what can never be change here (speaking of Hawai'i) It has been just beating a dead horse over and over. You know who you are... You just can't let the chance slip by to get on your damn soap box and beat the dumb horse to death again. What pleasure do you get from it??? Not happy with what I'm saying? Fine flame and call me names I could careless but if you don't like it here just go away. Let us be the nice quite fun loving group we were years ago before you showed up.

The problem is the forum software is quite old and doesn't offer alot of choices. Otherwise I could have cleaned it up a lot better. [Smile][Smile][Smile]
