I went by the "old safeway" this am - they have already closed the store

Went there today. Didn't realize it was King Kamehameha day....It was packed. Shopping cart lines from one end of the store to the other (and good luck finding a shopping cart). I do like the new store though. Lots of space and much more selection. And free samples of everything from steak to poke to bananas lining the whole store (kind of reminds me of Costco). They also have FREE WiFi throughout the building....and even an area with tables to sit down and eat while surfing the net. Also a cafe and Starbucks are inside along with Bank of Hawaii. Alcohol section is huge...and the produce section is twice as large then before. Now the bad news....the prices were very high. $1.30 for 1 lime. They raised the prices of their sandwiches. Their alcohol prices were out of this world. Even munchies were $1.00 more than other grocery stores.

I was hoping for some bargains that were a little better, and no such luck, but neither were they worse than before. I don't buy liquor (other than my Bailey's fix every so often), so I didn't notice that. Safeway has never been known for good liquor prices like Longs has. Gee, I saw the Starbucks sign, but there were so many people inside that I never found the Starbucks! I wonder if the samples are only for opening weekend ... would be nice if they kept it up. I actually bought some NY strip steak after tasting the sample. It was that good and tender. I almost never buy steak, so the sample got them a sale. It was only 4.99 a pound club price.

After being there for a while I was getting tired and just grabbed a hand basket to get the few things I needed.... Didn't even come up to the 50 buck minimum to take advantage of the 10% discount. Speaking of great liquor prices at Longs....They are having a sale on top shelf Vodka. Gray Goose is $24.95 a bottle for a very limited time. Limit 5

It was still so insanely busy at 3:30 yesterday they ran out of carts, it took 2 hours to do half an hours worth of shopping because the check out lines were so long they stretched to the ends of the inside aisles. We saved about $30 on a $120 cart. Many people were there for specific coupon items (cases of spam were a big hit) and the samples were still very popular. Pros: nice wide aisles, way more choices, greater selection of the O organics line, beautiful produce section, the deli section looks good too. Cons: many prices are still WAY high compared to other stores, all prices are very high if you don't do the Safeway card, the produce is still mostly imported from the mainland and is consistently over treated with that oily waxy stuff used to prolong shelf life (that stuff is nasty and hard to get off), nobody working in the store knows where things are yet, and the meats are still all packed for large families.
I think when things all shake out people will still pick up certain things at different stores based on price differences. Safeway will get extra business from the deli/hot food counters, but shoppers will need to be careful about what else they pick up while they are there, because some of Safeway's prices are so high. Day one on Friday was INSANE. I had to go to order a birthday cake for Saturday. Lines were 45 minutes long. Picking up the cake Saturday morning it was calm and quiet. two or three people in line. That store is over the top; I have a hard time imagining Hilo being able to support it but time will tell!!
