In defense of Dr. Miller and the Puna Community Medical Center, they are a clinic, not a primary care physicians' practice. So they focus on helping you with the problem you walk through their door with, but are not necessarily looking at the long term big picture of chronic conditions, that is what a primary care doctor is for. When I have been there they have always been very clear that they are not trying to be primary care providers, and always recommend follow up with my primary care provider. Some patients don't have a primary care doctor, and only go to the clinic, but that doesn't make PCMC a primary care practice.
The role of a clinic is very different from that of a primary care physician, and PCMC staff are very clear with patients that they are not taking on the kind of long term care and diagnostic process you get from a primary care physician. Carol

quote: Dr. Hart Miller practices in private practice in Hilo. He is also at the community health clinic. My mom saw him at his private practice as a primary provider, not at the clinic. He recommended many surgeries (3) and tons of pills for every individual problem. He is not for chronic pateints.

Dr. Kaiwi is only coming over to Hilo from Maui once a week to do pain management. He is not taking new patients as a primary provider. So that referral did not pan out.
We have been to the HMSA provider directory and got some names who are accepting new patients. anyone have any experience with Dr. Young Kim? Thanks for your help.

This is somewhate separate from the OP, but I've had better experiences with seeing doctors at the Bay Clinic for problems, acute or chronic (though not necessarily ones needing a big-picture approach) than any of the three primary care doctors I've had here. The problem is a combination of a small number of doctors overall, and all the ones who are any good not accepting patients. Regarding HMSA's PP list, I went through the entire thing and only found three who could *possibly* take me; two of them never called back as promised, so I didn't have much choice.

I'm searching for a new Doctor, too. I thought I had time to settle in as my Doctor has written my prescriptions for a whole year to my mail order company. Turns out they can't mail me any of the special class drugs, if not prescribed by a Hawaiian Doctor. One I have taken for over twenty years for a sleep disorder and is in a tiny dose and I have no substitute for that one. The pain meds are less of a priority, but without my sleep, the pain is worse. So I guess I will try and check out this Dr Young Kim myself.
Life goes on, with you or without you.
Peace and long life

Orchidlandguy,
Next time in Hilo, check the bulletin board at Down to Earth in the Walmart shopping center. I recall seeing an ad there for a holistic MD who is accepting patients. Don't remember the details, just that thank goodness there are holistic MD's around who don't prescribe cut, burn, and poison for everything.
