How's it compare to coming in from the boat launch? Was there in a Jeep and wouldn't attempt that "road" which was basically an a'a' flow. Had to go in reverse after 100 yards.

Now maybe with dedicated rock tires like this:

But with rental car radials, no. Not going there.

I just checked, and all the land surrounding the green sand beach is DHHL land, so DLNR has no say as to vehicle use, except for the land along the shoreline up to the high wash of the waves. The boat ramp belongs to DLNR's Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, but that is the only area of DLNR land to the east of South Point until you get up to the Kamilo area. There is also land that falls withing the Conservation District along the shore, but generally that has nothing to do with vehicular access along any existing trails.

The areas up a bit, around Kamilo, are State DLNR unencumbered land. We did have a team of officers in the area last week in response to complaints of illegal camping/squatting in the area.

You are correct, I meant to say DHHL but I always confuse these entities. Anyone can call the DHHL office in Honolulu or the field office in Hilo to get a confirmation that vehicle access is not permitted there.
