Fence, and leash?
#21
Yep. Adele told me herself, that they do not appreciate having trespassers on their property any more than you or I would. It is problematic because their property is so vast there is no effective way to control this, other than the area immediately surrounding the homes on the estate. There, you can expect a guard to confront you if you are attempting, say, to walk from Shipman Beach to Keaau via the private road.

They particularly do not appreciate unleashed dogs on their premises. Just think about where you live. Now, imagine that your property is much more immense than that and that you wish to take your dog for a stroll through that property. That's what they deal with. They encounter unleashed, vicious hunting dogs barely under voice control.

People bliss out here and imagine they can do whatever the hell they want because they are carefree, focused on their wants and needs and are oblivious to the wants and needs of others, such as the need to be secure from your mangey cur, who simply MUST walk this earth unrestrained.

This is exactly what is dealt with at the tide pools. Much of the area is private property. All the NW and neighbors ask is to leave your dog at home. Many people dont even bring a leash for them.

People want their dog to have the same fun as the family. And even though there are now porta potties, the doggies dont seem to use them! [Big Grin]

Happened upon this bit of info that might help (not cure) an aggressive dog: http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2012/01/12/ways-to-treat-canine-behaviors.aspx

Obviously, exercise and human interaction are primary, but this other info was interesting, too....

There is a wonderful solution to keeping your dogs on your lot. An Ultra Light dog fence. This is a wire that you surround your property with and connect with your electrical system. It can be in the ground, on the ground or woven through jungle a few feet off the ground. Special collars that you put on your dogs deliver an unpleasant ticking sound then barely a shock as they get close to the wire. Get the one that you can adjust the strength. I have pretested the collars on myself (not saying I put them around my neck) to know that it is nothing harmful. You train your dogs by walking around the parameter with them. We got ours, the cheapest we could find, from monellpets.com. The dogs will hear something on the road and run up only to 5 feet before the wire. After a while, they are pretty much trained to stay within your lot. Not saying this is foolproof, but so far....2 years. I think it cost about 300 dollars a few years ago for two dog collars and 2 acres of wire. I will say that the collars that the device comes on is crap and if you have 2 dogs or more that play and bite each other by the collars, get a better collar with a better latch to put the device on. All in all way cheaper than a chain link fence.

These work on MOST dogs... the last neighborhood we lived in on the mainland had a dog that would hear the clicks & bolt through the wire area...seems the sting was worth freedom.... then she would be stuck on the outside of the fence....somehow home was NOT worth the sting

It is much harder to train deaf dogs with the clicking collars, as they never get the clicking clue...and usually get freaked by the zap

There are some that vibrate, but for some reason, the reports I have seen seem to indicate they do not seem as effective with the deaf dogs... these dogs are sooo clued into their visual & smell clues that they just do not seem to notice the vibration as hearing dogs notice the clicking or vibration...

Did anyone else notice? This thread was started to generate meaningful discourse on this topic because people like Obie and Pog pretty much derailed a thread on a pet's death with their unkind and callus comments.

Now that intelligent and interesting comments are being raised on the very issue obie raised (the need to leash pets) he is nowhere to be found.

I am still here,I just quit commenting because everyone was piling on and attacking me.

The reason for my outburst was because this subject pops up every few months.

" My poor fluffy got run over by a car.The driver was driving x miles per hour"

Everyone takes side and it ends up with a bunch of name calling.(Is karma a one way street?)
Everyone starts citing laws and ordinances and coming up with solutions.
My idea is to use common sense.Keep your dog on a leash while on or near a public highway.Try to keep your dog confined to your yard.
I realize some dogs are escape artists.I had a 14 year battle with a dog that could escape from almost anywhere.

I believe I got my point across and got everyone talking about this.I believe that quite a few agree with me, even though they disagree with my approach. If it prevents one dog from being killed, In my mind it will all be worth it.

This thread....fence or lease..is great. Different problem though.

But it doesn't solve her problem of someone doing that on HER property. I don't live in that area so the vehicle and woman description was unknown to me. Having that info would help her.

The problem was when you accused her of lying. You're just not allowed to do that; most especially when she's only looking for info leading to the suspect.

"This thread....fence or lease..is great. Different problem though."

So start your own thread.

I won't reply to you here unless you want to talk about the rewards of keeping your dog on a leash !!
