If you own your own home why buy into insurance? I've never figured out why you would even want hurricane insurance. I told my mom to get rid of her hurricane insurance years ago after suckered into paying for over 20 years.
The house was built in the 60's and it's been through just about every thing you could throw at it. It's just a small 900sqft home with old jalacy windows. Still standing after all these years. I'm betting the termites will eventually win before a hurricane will. Even tho the house gets treated ever 10-15 years. I'd say your money would be better spent on flood insurance. Oh well. I think it's really easy to scare people into insurance. Pay up everyone hurricane is on it's way soon! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Hawaii_hurricanes

Hi,
I am looking for major insurance companies for my property insurance. I need the best price for my property. http://www.quotes-center.com/major-insurance-companies/

I suggest you start with a broker who will get quotes from a range of insurers, plus get quotes from the majors -- Allstate (Alan Oda), State Farm ...
I use Pyramid now, haven't seen the necessity to switch. I have used Allstate and when I first came we used Aloha, but then our broker moved to Allstate. Pyramid is supposedly not the cheapest but has good service. ericlp, why take out insurance if you own the home? Um, to have your liability covered, to replace home and contents if you have a fire, wind downs a tree on you, vandals destroy stuff, theft, etc.. ... Hurricane insurance I likely would not have if I didn't have a lender making me. I've only ever filed one insurance claim, but I was glad we had it. A neighbor's fire spread to our house and did some damage. Even with the fire department putting it out before it got going on our house, it was surprising how expensive the damage was. Heat-cracked windows, smoke damage ... It is also good to have insurance against damage other people do. Like when the neighbor's contractor accidentally destroyed our driveway and it had to be replaced. Ouch! Far better to have an insurance company go after the contractor than to try to pursue getting compensated on your own, as you will have to hire an attorney and you know what that costs. I would never own a home without carrying insurance, and I would never again want to rent without insuring my possessions. But when I was young, i was never insured. Then our house burned down ... I tell you, it is bad to lose everything when you are insured, but losing everything with NO insurance coverage really sucks and it took years to recover from that. Aloha guys....I'm an insurance broker who advertises on Craigslist to help people with their home, hurricane and flood insurance especially in lava zones 1 and 2. I have also insured a couple of unpermitted homes.
If you are in lava zones 3 and higher, your insurance is pretty easy to obtain. If you are in lava zone 1...I have 3 companies to shop with. If you are in lava zone 2....I have 5 companies to shop with. After I talk to you and get more information about your home (owner occupied or tenant occupied or vacation rental or vacant...type of construction, etc.) I will then get the quote from the insurance company that best suits your needs. Insurance premiums are going down...so I think it would be worthwhile to shop around. My phone number in Honolulu is 808-522-5394. My email address is nlau@financeinsurance.com. Norrin Lau Finance Insurance p.s. I have no mortgage, I live 2 miles away from the ocean...but I would rather pay the hurricane insurance premium than deplete my bank account if a hurricane ever hit my home. i got Dongbu insurance, stupid name but they have an A ranking strength in Hawaii. they have an office in hilo.
for house plus hurricane insurance i pay $560 yearly. that's the cheapest rate that i could find. 300 of it is for hurricane, i figured i would keep the hurricane with global warming, you never know what might hit big island next.

The Big Island has never been hit by a hurricane, according to the records available.
Worth taking into account if hurricane insurance is a very expensive optional extra.
