Bringing Firearms When Moving to B.I.

yep, a lot of criminals here who have guns, have them because they stole them from people who brought them over.

I remember talking to a guy selling his house about crime. He said he had been broken into once while he wasn't home. They stole his guns, nothing else.

The guns didn't stop the crime of break-ins. They became the problem.

I wonder how many Punaweb lurkers out there are taking notes on who is arriving and who is bringing guns, who already brought guns.

Most property crime around here consists of BURGLARY, not ROBBERY. They wait until you leave your property unguarded, then scoop it up. They don't sneak in your house at 3 a.m.. Once in a great while, and then it is news because it is rare.

Make gun ownership in Hawaii as difficult as (legally) possible and
then the idiots won't get their hands on guns so easily.

Yes, because then those who need them the most will be the ones the least likely to be able to get them. The wealthy, who benefit from gated communities, security guards, secure houses and rarely frequent higher crime areas will be the only ones with them. Oh, that's right, screw the poor, they don't know what's good for them

I think they need to confiscate all the cars. More likely to have an accident in a car than a gun related incident or a burglary. It would be more fuel efficient if everyone rode the bus and safer too. Then there wouldn't be all that traffic either. I know the bus here is inconvenient but it's for the betterment of society, won't you think of the children?

Better yet, just move everyone to apartment high rises within walking distance of police, hospitals and food. Then we'll all be perfectly safe and efficient.

But since I live in a rural area where I'm more likely to see a pig at my front door than a cop, I'll keep a gun. That way I might be alive to answer the cops questions in case I ever have an attempted burglary, because I tend to get upset when people steal stuff from me and there might be a confrontation.

Some points brought up cause I'm at home cause my ole' man is working on Oahu and some crazies moved in down the street and I can't go anywhere on this glorious Sunday.

Uh..since guns aren't manufactured on the Islands that I know of..or computers or cell phones or Hawaiian Hazlenut for my coffee...and who wants to buy a used gun?

If you're a criminal or a nutjob you can't get a gun; that works for me. It wasn't hard for me to get one but it wasn't cheap either.

I feel like, if you move here because it is different, and you want a change of lifestyle, why not start with not bringing the old mindset and old stories with you? Because if you don't, Hawai'i will change into something that reflects mainland mindset where people obsess over this stuff.

Do you see any topics on this forum started by people who are from here and obsessing over their access to guns? No, it is primarily the new arrivals or people making plans or people who haven't moved here yet. Or people who chose to move into subdivisions that have Wild West type reps ... where I agree I might be scared too.

When I'm engaging in regular social life with groups of people who grew up here mixed with transplants who have put in some time, the amount of focus on gun talk is zilch. Nor are they constantly obsessing about someone breaking in to their house.

Are you really moving to Hawai'i? or is it to Alaska -- or Texas -- or LA -- only with better weather?
If you are moving to Hawai'i, and have a love for Hawai'i as it is, it is a place that is not that into guns. Maybe consider checking it out for what it is instead of changing it into what you're leaving behind?

So, I get from voyager's post that he/she wants to make sure we understand that he/she is not a gun totin' fanatic; in prior posts he/she has been emphatic that guns are not the best option all the time and in fact can/may be more harmful than other options or no options at all.

Duly noted.

The question of "Under what circumstances" can never really be answered, in terms of guns for protection anyway, because of limited resources and plain chaos. Greek tragedies and philosophy are depressing cause they're centered around trying to avoid the unavoidable only to be stricken by what they are trying to avoid.

My ex-in-laws, Maui "locals", had guns and hunted pig, goat and pheasant in the 70s. I would imagine they still do. They probably hunt axis deer now too. Sorry if they don't fit your anti-gun PC view of locals.
