Born in Scotland on 1825 to John Moffitt and Janet Smith. James married Mary A and had 7 children.


I guess my great-great grandfather spelled his name wrong or they added the 2nd "t" at Ellis Island.

Sorry for the tough grading, Oink, but that's me, always the highest standards of truth, integrity and accuracy. Obie's hit on it, Ellis Island often didn't have any papers to work with and names were mis-spelled after that so you guys got stuck with whatever they gave you, but the Scots and Irish weren't known for literacy either, so that didn't help. Fun fact - Samoa and American Samoa are now as of 12-31-11 on opposite sides of the dateline. Dec 30, 2011 disappeared entirely for Samoa when the change occurred.

Thanks for the links, hikatz, both interesting and entertaining! Just for anyone interested, I'm officially British. Born in England, father from Northern Ireland and mother from Austria. I feel more English than British but my last name is Scottish (I'm a fan of cricket for instance, that might make it clear to some how confused I am!). Some might call me European but don't dare say that to my face. Ever. I will not be responsible for my subsequent actions.
