Bring almost nothing when you move
#51
This has been covered a bunch but anything under 600 sq feet doesnt need a permit on ag land as long as people are not living in it. You could hide and secretly live there if there were lots of trees, but it's difficult to do, and not comfortable given the climate. Also, the waste disposal is the problem. You'd need a cesspool or you might be reported, and in order to get a cesspool dug you need a decent driveway in.

Leilani is pretty, but no desire to live there. (Zone 1) We got an offer on our house, so if the bank approves everything, we are looking at early November.( just in time for the rainy vog season, right?) Anyone try shipping crates 4x4x4 and shipping things in them? I have heard it's not bad, either. We are bringing almost nothing, and using one price boxes from post office for the rest, but have a few larger things I wouldn't trust usps with, like desktop computer we use for tv and wife will surely think of a thing or 20 to fill it up. Any advice on that?
Also, we found a waterfront hotel in Hilo that rents a room for 4 with kitchenette for $920 / month... any advice on them? We plan to stay there, or some furnished rental for the first few weeks until we can secure better accommodations for a longer term while we house hunt.

comin' your way soon!

Which hotel? Some friends spend every winter at the Country Club condos/hotel and really like it. But the building's lease is up for renewal, so things have been changing. Shouldn't make much difference for your rental, but make sure you know what's going on before you buy anything on the Hilo waterfront.

Or, does anyone know--have the leases been renewed?

Some of those places on Banyan Drive are really sketchy dives, a coworker stayed there just long enough for all their luggage to get infested with bedbugs before they moved out. The hard partying vacationers were more than they could take after the first three nights. My super frugal parents stayed at the Dolphin Bay for almost a month and really liked it, they have an assortment of rooms in a variety of configurations for different sized groups and much aloha. The monthly rate must have been good or they wouldn't have stayed there. Not waterfront, but walking distance to the Farmer's market and downtown grocery stores.

You can bring 2 boxes or plastic bins each person on the plane when you come. They charge a fee, but it is less than shipping fee. We brought items like toaster oven, tools, lamps, sewing machine, etc in Rubbermaid bins on the plane. Worked out well.

We used the biggest boxes we could to fly over (at that time the flight allowed 2 boxes ea check on that were 62linear inches, check with your carrier, our boxes were 21x21x20 - we actually had our desktop wrapped in linens in one of those boxes, as we didn't want to be without it & trusted the airline over some of the other methods....) plus our carryon & laptop/camera bags (yes you will feel like a pack mule at the airport...but just smile, winter will be coming & you will be leaving!)

We didn't ship any TV's or monitors, as ours were older & it was time...also only shipped the one desktop that was newer & a newer laptop...(DH is a comp geek... usually had 10-15 systems in various states of....) We also shipped everything we kept through the USPS (~81 boxes, mostly big).... but this was a major re-invention for us....no more overstuffed furniture, no more antiques - really reduced our library of book & his electronics toys & my art toys (all needed much more TLC than we wanted to invest) Believe me, stuff has still found it's way back!

If you are shipping anything that is within the USPS regulations for "media mail" that is by far the best deal...but do not try to put anything else in those boxes, or it could get not as nice! You can ship anything USPS without a local address by shipping to:
"General Delivery", your name, town ST Zip (Hilo is 96720, Keaau is 96749, Pahoa is 96778)

One thing to get before you leave is a phone book (sounds odd, but the "Yellowbook Paradise Pages" has airport map[s, maps of the shopping center, voters reg. wikiwiki form, many phone numbers, maps of the island, newcomers guide, how & what to recycle & send to waste, disaster maps & information & much more...one of those tools you will want to have... (contact 1800-yb-yellow or www.yellowbook.com)

I would also be cautious of making a month commitment to a "Hilo Waterfront Hotel"... as most of the truly waterfront hotels do not rent that low (well over $100 a night for a room is fairly standard) and even most of the Banyan old ex-hotels that are much more rundown were over $1000/month....HOWEVER UH-Hilo just opened the new dorms & the ones that rented to students may now be trying to rent what are now ex-dorm rooms...and those were all in the area that has a lease issue that may not get renewed, so I doubt that any money has been spent on those rooms....

You may just want to take one week to do a more tourist thing with a more high end hotel & decompress, or you may want to look at getting out into some of the local areas through vacation rentals... who knows, maybe some of your Punaweb friends may some ideas, like ohana hopping ;~)
