Hiking trail head

Went the inland route going and came back along the waters edge on the way back. Both have a special beauty to me. If it has been raining a lot yes it does get wet. I'm happy going either way. Just looking to go beyond the Shipman beach. Just may do a reverse hike from Hilo side to see how it goes.

My little guy and I just walked 1 hour in ( not very far factoring in a Kinder's curiousity for all things besides distance covered : ) via the Hilo side this past weekend .... Excited to hear the route.

1) Would you recommend parking at Lehia and walk in from there, or drive a little farther down the road?
2) It looks like there are a fair number of houses, are there any problems with dogs?
3) Are there trails that go to the ocean without going through someone's yard?
4) What's the best thing you'll see, and how far down the road is it located?

The one time I tried to do this walk over to Shipman beach from HPP, there were huge puddles of water, and ankle depth mud. Needless to say, we turned back after 45 minutes and never made it to the beach. There were also swarms of mosquitos. It might be drier now, but it was the worst "hike" I've ever taken in my life.

I abandoned the whole idea when I drove in there further than I had in the past. There is a gate that is open but there is a sign that say keep out. I didn't want to park and take a chance to investigate further do to the stink eye from one of the people living there. For me, it just wasn't worth the hassle and possible confrontation with the local people. It is possible to hike all the way on the lava rocks by the ocean.... might be a long slow hike. Post back if you give it a go!!

Tried this a couple of times from Kaukaha by bike about 5 years ago. The first time was great, only a few people, everyone friendly, and the road brings you to a sweet little green sand beach. The second time I just got a load of the stink eye and was chased by someone's dog as the owners stood there laughing. Good luck.

you will have to scramble over rocks close the shore in most areas, there is no trail in some spots, its all shore walking and scrambling... it would take many hours to go from Kaloli to Kings Landing... and close to 1.5 hours just to Shipman

lots of Hawaiian ruins between Kaloli and Shipman too, and also early haole 'ABC' carvings on the smooth rocks along the shore (19th Century dated english names and initials)

PS stay close to the shore... there are many 'stinkeye squatters' in the jungles closer to Kings Landing...

The road/trail that goes to Kaloli Point that is just a bit before the parking area that is new, looks like it is useable by a jeep or 4 wheel drive. Is it all right to ride a small (and quiet) dual sport bike on it? I bicycled it a bit to the water, and it keeps going.

Shipman placed large boulders around the area to prevent truck & ATV access. Since then, an illegal 4 wheel drive track was created to go around the rocks. As far as I know walking and biking is OK, but motorized vehicles are not allowed. If you park in the new lot, take the path that veers to the right at about a 30 degree angle to the the main path that goes to Shipman Beach. You will reach the ocean in about 5 minutes. From there you can walk along the cliffs or inland on a 4 wheel drive path through the ironwoods all of the way to Kaloli Point. I would guess it's about a 20-30 minute hike. Ocean caves and lava arches are some of the interesting features along the way.
