I went there too, and they wouldn't do the safety check because my pickup doesn't have a tailgate. I think that is ridiculous. If I have cargo, I can put the tailgate on. If not, I save gas without it. NANNY STATE!

quote: You can be fined if cited for expired safety (as in during a traffic stop). You also won't be able to renew your registration if the safety is expired. "In theory" the safety/registration are only required when operating "on a public road", but to my knowledge nobody has been brave enough to make a test case.

quote: I went back there, after restoring my tailgate. Somewhere between checking all my lights and getting to the safety check, one of my reverse lights went out. They changed it for me for $4.00, which I thought was reasonable. What was less reasonable was that they charged me an $5.20 because I have tinted windows. They had to hold a gizmo up to the window (took about 5.2 seconds) to determine if the tint was legal. So I'm thinking that the gizmo costs one dollar per second, and I was happy that it kicked out a reading so quickly. Had it taken a full minute, I would have been pissed.

quote: I can confirm this. I was on my way to work, getting a late start already, when I stopped in to get air in my tires before going over the hill to Kona. Noticed a lady getting her car inspected. 20 minutes later I was back on the road with a fresh safety inspection.

There is also a guy on 28th In HPP between Paradise and Kaloli, closer to Kaloli, makai side with large gravel driveway that does it in the evenings, has a sign out front. Great guy great job and reliable. He also recommends people in the park come on the first of the month after it expires so they get an extra month every year....
