I believe Roger Christie is still rotting in jail for a couple of years now, no bail, no trial, for the hideous crime of growing a medicinal plant.

The further ironic part will be this:
Now, the pot grower will stand trial, be convicted and have every asset he owns forfeited and be totally ruined.

I was perusing this topic further with my google machine and i came across:

Granted, 2 million is a lot. But why even set bail at all for a convicted murderer?
I seriously question the competence of these 'judges'
Also, Hi Liskir, I feel for roger but i'd rather not turn this into a thread about him. That said i'm just as outraged about his incarceration as you and would like to discuss it on another thread.

It is obvious that Hawaii has no state guidelines for bail. The arbitrary numbers out there are pretty disparate!

Then there was the 25 yr old Keaau Woman who has $89,750 bail for felony check writing of 28 checks last fall for a total of $9,394.92
Not sure I really understand bail here, if it is to make sure the accused does not flee, she does not seem to, after all, she has 2 other cases pending, a theft & a burglary, and was arrested for this while arriving back to the island at Hilo Airport.... if it is to mirror the value or "criminality" of the crime, her bail seems soo much more than a much more violent accused...

bail is usually set to guarantee appearance at trial - ive seen the judges take assets in to account - add the fact we live on an island - where can one go off island without leaving tracks? as to Christie - the feds got him - the same feds now raiding shops in states that have voted to allow the sale..... Feds by definition play hard ball - look how quickly the molester in Lelani disappeared... no bail for that monster

Carey, that same thought hit me, too, when I read the news. I remembered this thread and was going to wake it up and make some cynical comment. You beat me to it! This totally rattles what brain I have. I thrive on logic, there is none here! Lawlessness rules!
Actually, on a final note, I have read many similar occurrences happening all over the country, not just in our little corner. The times are changing, and it ain't for the good.

innocent until proven guilty is the concept - a fair bail to allow one to help in their defense deeply rooted in the system
rules apple to low life and upper crusty citizens alike in a democracy
are we judging the crime, lifestyle or looks? there is a lot of marginal mental illness out here as well......
