Get a fence and a pitt. Neighbors and no privacy is sometimes the way to go. Cut back to the plants to make it harder for thieves to hide.

There is never a real guarantee but some area's are better than others.

Make sure to hide that 10K solar setup! Sad

JDU 722, Good job to neighbor for that license id. A little "baseball bat" justice seems in order, and a lot more good neighbors like you seem to have. Let's make it way more dangerous for these roving thieves. Send ambulances not cops!!

So sorry this happened to you. I know it's hard, but do try to remember, in the end, they are just "things". It's a good thing no one got hurt. Also glad to hear you have such a good neighbor. Count your blessing for that.
I would say if you're going to be away, an alarm system is probably the way to go. Peace of mind for not too much money.

I was just getting "homeowners insurance" and one of the questions was "can you see your house easily from the street"? So, I guess this is considered a deterant. I just still have almost nothing. WE are moving next week and I'm hoping it only takes a couple hours. Either you pay tons of money and time to protect your stuff, or you just try to have very little, and not worry if it's taken.

I thought about getting renters insurance even tho I own the place. What's the cheapest rates these days? 100 bucks a year for maybe getting some of your crap back when someone kicks in the door.

Unoccupied homes always get hit. Putting plywood on the place is like putting a sign saying "I'm gone come rip me off"
I worked on a house in Hpp that had been ripped. The H.O. boarded up the place. The rippers pulled up one sheet on a blind side of the house and left it on. Going in and out like a pet door. The HO had a trailer and lots of expensive tools. They loaded up the trailer and took everything that was of any value. He had a safe mounted in the wall. They ripped it out. Took fixtures even. The H.O. never told any of the neighbors he was leaving. Never even talked to his neighbors. And this was on Kaloli Pt where there is a good watch program.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

"Unoccupied homes always get hit."

Not so. There are many houses that are unoccupied for much of the year around Puna and most of them are left alone.
In my neighborhood I know of many houses that are almost always empty and have been so for years - never seen a problem yet.
It's terrible when it happens, I know, but it's not the norm. I don't want people getting the wrong idea.

I think an alarm system, even a standalone one, is a very good investment.

Well the side walk sale is over.....again boarded up..... I guess to keep the bugs out....
Took everything even the uv filters and on demand hot water heater.....
Cops said its à family/ friend operation....
It is dishearting but not all is lost.... I guess it just makes us make the final move a bit sooner...
Soon i'll be posting a " for sale " sign on our igloo here in Alaska.......
Oh the Paper work involved.... With insurance.....

I may have exaggerated. Maybe I should have said more likely to be hit than homes that are occupied. I personally know people who got broken into when they went on vacation. Houses that are unoccupied for long periods of time with no owners or tenants around probably don't have much valuable in them.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.
