Shots fired in Leilani
#21
Shots being fired near Vacationland used to mean one less pig would be rooting up the garden.
These shots were during daylight hours and we we're kind of used to it.

The sign shooters are just punks. They come at night to tear up the roads and race. They burned down a lua at Ahalanui.

If you think having an gun in the house for self protection is no good, may I assume you have no fire extinguisher ? No condoms ? Do you wear a helmet when you ride a motorcycle ? Do you put on a seatbelt ?

There is no difference.

I've had guns since I was 14, and have used a gun in self defense once (no shots fired). Hawaii is very restrictive of firearms. There are threads here you can do a search and read through them. Things can get pretty hot and at least one thread was closed as some got into what guns and calibers for self defense.

I have pretty much stayed away from the subject lately. Here is an active forum on shooting and firearms in Hawaii:

not unusual to hear shots in rural america - If its a hunting based culture gun shots are not out of the norm

Its the zimmermans in the world causing issues - not the hunters ....

Most problems are caused by "gentrification", which tends to put disparate lifestyles in close proximity; this is aggravated somewhat by the local land-use problems -- people who move here see something that looks like "residential", so they make all kinds of incorrect assumptions about "the norm".

The next lava flow will reset the cycle.

I think having a firearm around can be helpful. This being said, the Second Amendment doesn't consider the amount of training, practice and familiarity with guns that was around a couple hundred years ago. These days, pretty much any idiot without a felony can have one. Idiots that have a felony can steal them from law abiding idiots.

To answer the question; I'd say that having a gun in the house without training, maintaining, and securing it would be like having an empty fire extinguisher, a condom with holes in it, a cardboard motorcycle helmet, or a frayed seat belt.

I support strong gun law and strict punishment for violators.

This is a fair assessment.

Luck for me, both my wife and myself grew up in houses where there were guns and both know how to use one.

It seems like there is a lot of petty crimes and break ins in Puna, but not many home gun owners to deter the break ins. (even ice heads dont like to be shot)

Perhaps there hasnt been a good education or training system set up so Home Owners can guard their property.

btw- Any reference to Zimmerman is about as ignorant as it can get.

The 2nd Amendment did address the issue of training, practice, etc:

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State."

It's just that so often people only remember the part about their right to bear arms, and not the part about a responsibility for those arms to be well regulated.
