Shots fired in Leilani
#41
D2K,
I am not sure what you think you mean by "a paddling" (although my husband might want to know what you meant) but I said nothing to, or about, you and did not mention anything about the Simpsons. I don't know why you think it is always all about you.

This was just one example that randomly popped up on google news today, and not a particularly "sensationalized" one if you read the article. I also know someone personally who saw her 15 year old boyfriend get killed in virtually the same way, a toddler was shot and killed last week by her older brother, a ten year old was shot in the face by a buddy who was showing off his dad's guns a few weeks ago, these are all proof that kids routinely get their hands on guns and accidentally kill each other. You might want to write those events off as sensationalized, but that is wishful thinking, these are real events that happened to real people who did nothing wrong except ending up in a room with a gun that belonged to a careless owner.

If your weapons and ammo are secured properly you will need more time to get to them than you would have in a home invasion. Guns that aren't secured properly, with the ammo locked up in a different place, can easily end up involved in these tragedies. There has been a lot of "lock and load" bragging here on Punaweb about people's personal firepower at times, I am just pointing out the ongoing downside to letting just anyone with a debit card own a gun, without requiring gun safety classes and permits. Those kinds of requirements are the "well regulated" part of the 2nd amendment.

"Apologies to the OP for getting off track. Let us hope the person taking pot shots in Leilani is apprehended safely."

The person will not be apprehended because they did nothing wrong. The loud argument was about how to put down the family dog.She wanted to go to the Humane Society or a Vet.He wanted to use his traditional method.

He won !!

As long as you don't shoot across a road,at an occupied house or at a person, you are legal to shoot a weapon.

Shooting your own dog in your own backyard is legal !!

And if that's the case, one can only imagine the quality of "life" that household truly has!

"Firearms are a convenient example used by the gun control lobby." This makes no sense, but you rarely do.

This is good to know, so thank you for that.
I actually don't have a problem with guns, as long as they are used properly. We had someone a long while ago hunting a pig behind the house, and he shot it. I have no problem with that either.

Again thank you for easing my mind.

Summation of this thread

Instant Analysis:
Shots fired. Woman screamed. What is going on in our subdivisions?

Commentary:
1) We need guns to protect ourselves from this kind of situation.
2) Guns would not help to make a difference in this kind of situation.

Final Summary:
A man shot a dog with a gun, because the dog was near the end of it's life. The woman (screaming) agreed the dog should be put down, but preferred another method was used.

Gun advocates were correct, a gun was useful in this situation, although not for the reasons they suggested.

Opponents of gun ownership were also correct, a gun is a deadly weapon, although in this case it was lethal to a dog, not the screaming human as was feared.

Right-to-dog-life supporters did not weigh in on this issue.

I'm pretty sure that it is not legal to fire a gun within a subdivision, even an "ag zoned" subdivision. We have had shots fired in our neighborhood of 1 acre lots, when we had a reason to be talking to a police officer about something else we asked about the rules. The police told us that it is not legal to shoot or hunt with a gun in subdivisions, even rural ones, because of the risk of bullets going where they were not intended. This is why there are hunters who advertise on craigslist that they will hunt pigs on your property with bows, dogs, or traps instead of guns. He also encouraged us to call them if we heard shots again.

Obie, do you know the people involved and that's how you found out what happened or did you just put two and two together and came up with your own conclusion?

I live in Leilani Estates and I found this very disturbing when I read about it. This is the first explanation I have heard and I was just curious where you got the information from.

Here's a link to a post about the difficulty of euthanizing a beloved pet here in Puna. Not trying to start an argument, just doing a reality check. I don't think that the Humane Society will provide euthanasia to walk-ins.

I can not believe this could be true here in Hawaii. Unless you can provide some proof I will just assume you are making it up.

Anyone who moved here from somewhere else probably sees the high level of interpersonal violence between and within various local cultural factions. Personal beatings are fairly common and attacks with a machete happen too often. Can you imagine how much worse it could be if any thug with overhanging tires could just stop by a pawn shop and pick up a gun whenever he gets angry at his girlfriend or mom? I think there's good reason to have guns be difficult to acquire here, and those of you who feel naked without them should be able to get them if you go through the process and particularly if you are well trained and keep your weapons secure. It's hard to trust the police to follow through on a lot of the crime here, like that escaped convict they were just told where and when to find and they couldn't manage to catch him before he killed another person. So yes, please keep your guns if you need them and use them appropriately, but overall I think Hawaii is better off keeping our local population away from such dangerous tools.
Personally I have never felt the need to own a gun and survived many decades without unnecessary fear. But I do have a couple dogs with very loud barks and strong jaws, and if need be there's lots of stuff lying around that could easily be a weapon (chairs/ bricks/ tilapia) Of course the best defense is to avoid trouble and get away when you see it coming and keep in mind that testosterone can be a poison.
