I had one removed a couple if years ago. Got a local by injection, 10 minutes later the dentist pulled it out, stuffed cotton in the puka. I changed the cotton a few times over the next 24 hours. Never felt a bit of pain, even the next day. Took about 2 months for the puka to be filled in by the gum. All good! Out of pocket cost was $65 out of $350 for the total.

I had four impacted wisdom teeth removed on a single visit to a Dentist on O'ahu during the mid 90's.
I cannot remember the Dr's name but it was fairly painless and I was eating beef jerky that same afternoon. Local anesthesia only, and a prescription for ibuprofin for swelling. "Life is labor, and all that is good in life comes from that labor..."

There was an article in the last couple days about a teenager who had her wisdom teeth out on this island and is now in a coma. I don't remember the details, but it was in the Tribune. And I'm sorry I don't know how to link, but go and see if you can find it, and figure out the details of it. GL (I imagine she was under some type of anesthesia for this to occur, but you should look at it anyhow)

I guess I am thinking of that story that is linked above. Sorry, I didnt realize it was already on here. Just make sure, if possible, she is wide awake the entire time.

I had all four of mine taken out in the early or mid-90's in the Seattle area. I was awake, but was administered nitrous oxide. One of my wisdom teeth was particularly difficult to extract. I recall it was the first one to be extracted, and remember hearing the dentist and assistant commenting on how it just wouldn't come out. (The others were extracted easily.) The nitrous was awesome for alleviating any anxiety on my part. I remember them putting in the stitches, and being loopy enough to think they were flossing where the teeth had been, and thinking that was pretty silly. I can't imagine anyone being wide awake for wisdom tooth removal.
For the first few days of recovery, I only ate soft foods such as jello. I did the salt water gargling as recommended by my dentist, and didn't end up with any dry sockets. (I found out later that they had bets in his office that I would have at least one dry socket due to the severity of my wisdom teeth situation.) I had several days of discomfort/pain, and definitely needed the pain meds that were prescribed for me. I will also add that I have a pretty good tolerance for pain. I returned to work two days after the procedure, which in hindsight wasn't the best idea, but I'm a workaholic. Wishing you the best in finding a good doc on island for your daughter. My wisdom teeth had to be broken into pieces in order to extract them. They were very impacted. All I was given was novocaine, and it didn't really hurt while they broke my teeth and removed the fragments, but it did hurt afterward...
I guess I have a high pain threshold. (but I cried like a baby when one of my dogs died) "Life is labor, and all that is good in life comes from that labor..."

FYI: Update on Dr. Stover: (*Snipped - More at link)
http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/25044...feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+HawaiiNewsNow-News+%28Hawaii+News+Now+-+News%29 HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - The State has opened a new investigation on the Big Island dentist accused of putting a young mother in the intensive care unit. Kristen Tavares, 23, remains in a coma after going in to have her wisdom teeth pulled by Dr. John Stover. Now accusations against Dr. Stover are piling up. In July 2012 an employee says she asked Dr. Stover how his day was. According to court documents he allegedly responded with, "If he had a gun, he would shoot it out, and when the FBI arrives, they would know it was him, because he'd still be standing there." The employee asked: "You're not freakin going postal on us, are you?" Dr. Stover replied: "No, I'm going FedEx." Terroristic threatening charges were brought against Dr. Stover. However they were dismissed because the judge felt there wasn't intent. The Hawaii County Prosecutors office is appealing that decision. Another employee, a massage therapist, says she was rushed into surgical procedures despite not having any training. She says Dr. Stover has anger issues and would get mad about drugs and equipment not being prepped correctly, yet still used them saying, "the fact that he put drugs into someone and didn't know for sure what they were at first completely freaks me out." Employees claim adult drugs were used on an 11 year old patient and two employees worried about Dr. Stover's state of mind. "I think Dr. Stover is financially stressed out and continues to accuse staff of sabotaging his practice. I believe Dr. Stover will one day crack and hurt or even kill someone or himself," said the employee in a police report. "We all feel that if something doesn't happen to improve the environment at work that something catastrophic is going to happen. Either a patient will die, or Dr. Stover might lose it and someone else might get hurt," said another employee in a letter written to Dr. Stover's management, dated July 17, 2012. Dr. Stover's attorney Brian De Lima says the terroristic threatening charges were dismissed and have no merit. He isn't talking about employee accusations.

Dr. Stover removed all four of my wisdom teeth. He quoted me approximately $1,300 to remove them with anesthesia/900.00 without anesthesia back in 2005. I went with the cheaper option. It took about 4-5 days to recover.
