Oneself, I seem to remember that you will be renting in OL, fairly close to HWY 130... if that is true, DH & I mixed carpooling & utilizing the bus for a number of years, until his other side work was full on for over a year....
DH then used a motorcycle until the wet roads took out his knee... then we purchased a very old, inexpensive XCab 4WD pickup sothat I could do field studies for school, & now have a second, crew cab 4WD... only because we had 2 twentysomethings visiting for weeks around the holidays & it was cheaper to get an older 4WD for the girls to explore with than to rent one for 2 twentysomethings!
If you do decide you can work with one vehicle & the bus schedule, it is best to remember that the schedule is a suggestion, buses have been known to come a little early, but most likely will be later...sometimes much later...
Having an umbrella for sun & rain (there was a lady who used to ride the bus from HWY130 & had a red & white umbrella with "BUS STOP" printed on it...) and a good something to read...and be willing to get to know the others waiting... it is all good! I still use the bus for much of my in town travels...
PS: For the years we did not have 2 vehicles, we have always had a light duty hitch on the car (for bike carriers) & have a hitch mounted tray.... both of which we brought here (actually had the tray as one of our pieces of luggage coming over...)

Thanks Carey, seems like its manageable. As often as it rains I am surprised people bike or moped that much, seems a guarantee you are going to be soaked by the time you get where your going .

Bikes, scooters, and mopeds are very very dangerous here. It is not just the rain. It is also certain drivers that are not happy to see you on the road, and can harass you. It's a very "car oriented" place. Wish it were not the case.

Hmmm, I beg to differ on a lot of things. I only have ONE car. I take all my trash, bottles, cans with it to the dump, Yes I do lay down a tarp if I plan to go to get dirt, t-posts, cement, things like that. But I also don't over fill my trash bags and I don't put liquid in the trash or I don't wait till maggots are hatching to take to the dump. Largest item I have ever hauled was a 16' 4x4 with meter base attached. I've made numinous trips to HD to get toilets, sinks, shower tub and walls... Pluming pipes, Studs and 4x4's. Even a 47" flat screen fit. Had to take it out of the box. But it did fit.
What is my only car? A toyota echo. The only thing I wish I had a truck for are 4x8 sheets of plywood and when I go to costco and sit on a recliner I want to buy. With high gas prices around here that is usually $4 dollars and higher you'll wish you didn't have a truck getting 15-18 mpg. You can get a pretty good deal on a Yaris over here. It's the same car as an Echo and they get around 40+ mpg depending on how you drive it.
Of course if you own 3 acres and plan on gardening 2 of them then yeah a truck would probably be the best for you. I've hauled in a lot of soil to my house in 30/40 lbs sizes. I forgot I was at a garage sale and hauled a 24' extension ladder back. Price was too good to pass up!
was a bit tight but worked out with about 5' hanging out the back trunk.
I have even entertained the idea of putting a hitch on the car and getting a small 4x6 utility trailer.
One can haul just about anything with a small trailer.

DH LOVES biking.... and did not have a problem with drivers, nor the roads on this side... the wet road was dew wet on the other side (that 'black ice' type thing with dry oily roads & a wee bit of wet...)
The only reason WHY he gave the bike up was me, and the fact he had his one ACL repair...
That said, that motorcycle was in a horrible incident, covered on this forum, thanks to a distracted driver due to the political sign waiving... Our friend was traveling, at speed, on HWY11 when a driver, that had pulled over to talk story with the waivers, pulled right into the bike.... luckily our friend had full safety gear on, but even with that, some pretty rough injuries...
Makes me very hesitant when I see any vehicle on the side of the road...will they just pull out into me - have even had some duffuses that have pulled out almost into our trucks, which are definitely not as "invisible" as a bike! It is not the visibility of the vehicle, but the ability to be rammed that matters..

worst thing about owning a truck - being asked to haul over size items for those that do not.
I wont do refrigerators - too old for that crazyness - always second story as a well - grin
Trailers really pricy in my research..... renting when needed a good option
good read on the new outback - I dont know what to think about the "cvt" seems like it would take a beating out in puna - I still like a gearshift over an automatic much less a "cvt"

WATCH FOR MOTERCYCLES!! I will be doing some motercycle riding when I get to Puna.Sold the husky! looking at the bullet proof go anywhere yamaha tw 200.selling the chevy spark, don't think it would hold up in Puna and in light of the recent debacle government motors has found its way into me and chevy may be done.Probably better to spend the money on an old pick up when I get there. When riding a motorcycle it's not best to assume other drivers don't see you,it's best to assume they do see you and will try to kill you.

Yes, i have almost hit many pedestrians and cyclists etc. The roads are narrow here- with few street lights, and things can be overgrown on the edges as well. I work really hard at trying to see everyone, but this environment here makes it difficult.

Thanks Julie, all we can do is PAY attention and limit distractions when we drive. And be courteous.
