I can't even find a good can opener on the mainland, but I am glad you reminded me, I will be there in May also, so I will pack a couple new ones! I would say, according to where you will live, bring a few hoodies and sweats...it gets cold up in the forest!

for real.. I got a friend who makes their living buying stuff at garage sales and selling them (mostly) on ebay.. says over 50% of all yard sales he goes to turn out to be people who moved here (fairly recently) and are giving up and going back.. and selling all the stuff they hauled over here in the first place.

Not knowing any better, I brought a hooded raincoat with a zip-out lining with me. Although it's definitely too warm to wear it around here, I've worn it often in Volcano, especially when I'm there at night. It's also been very handy when I've had to fly back to the mainland during certain months of the year.

Bullwinkle, giving up, not a phrase I take stock in. Done a little of that in the distant past. I found it not productive.I will always be able to leave there if I choose to.Those people that give up never really tried. Lots of defeatist uninformed people out there.JMO. Vini Vidi Vici, thats the motto those people dont get.First two parts are easy its that conquering that takes some doing.that said it is a repeating thread here one puna web, people leaving after a short time. That would scare some, it motivates me.Look at what the government projects the puna population to be in 2030.Very close to double that of today.I think that the world is about to decend on Puna.Yes some of these will be the N.I.M.B.Y ers. They will be the ones hopefully that give up.The enlightened, tolerable, progressive types like my self not so much. These people will be from all social classes and from all over the world. Some will be loud and pushy some will blend in well and the rest somewhere between.Have no doubt though they are coming.Your friends ebay business should thrive like many others with the increase in population.

Back to track:
We do use rain gear (esp for when DH used to motorbike, it kept the rain off his leathers & from pelting into the skin) Have ponchos (one of tyvek, one of coated nylon & a bunch of emergency ones for when you are out & an angry cloud comes by) Wish I had brought a ripstop lightweight one I used to have...it was nice for not getting foggy inside

Canopener, this product listing explains the newer USA made version of the trusty old canopener...you can research more if you are interested in some of the other newer ones do not work as well...but mostly it is lack of mfg control...:

we picked up one of these from target after buying 2 cheap one that didn't last 3 months (no joke). Well, we have had the above for over a year. No creaking of the handle, thing looks like new as when we purchased it. Sure it was 22 bucks but worth it. If we ever move this thing is coming with us. Wink

Couldn't agree more ! Puna is on the upswing, and those that are smart and survivors will reap the rewards to be set up well in a good position.
