Not technically accurate -- County has provided plenty of "guidance" in the form of a Development Plan that requires everyone to drive long distances for their basic necessities. Thank you for stating this more clearly than I did and for adding the part about the so-called Development Plan. There is something called an "Action Committee" that is supposedly spearheading the implementation of the Puna CDP. If ever anything was misnamed, it was that committee. Of course the more cynical among us, including myself, suspect it is doing exactly what the powers that be want . . . which is nothing.
I'd like to say more, but I have to get in my car and drive to Hilo now.

Perhaps Graham could have gotten some amendments to the building code that would have assisted him in creating his ecovillages had he worked on Bill 270. We contacted Graham back in 2010 to ask him to testify against bill 270 or to help us work on amendments to the bill. Graham refused and I was told by then Council woman Brittany Smart in a recorded conversion that Graham and James Weatherford who she described as "her boys" had met with the head of the building dept and was working on their own 'alternative building code'. Four years later he wants to blame us for the defeat of this special interest bill that would not have done anything for the majority of people who are interested in sustainability.

Don't worry kalakoa there are people making investments in our community to provide services that we need in Pahoa not Hilo. More small cottage businesses are springing up in our little village of Pahoa. Before you hurt them by asking everyone to drive down the coast to kehena why don't you support local commercially zoned businesses in Pahoa. No Graham starts an illegal market to endear himself to the community and further his own selfish interest like exempting the village green society from county code so he can continue to rape and deforest the state conservation land adjacent to them.

Cutting the driving distance in half is a good start, but still too far. (I keep hoping for $10/gallon gas to force the issue -- but the people who control the price of gas aren't going to let that happen.)

Sounds like a DLNR issue, not a County issue. Have you taken it up with DLNR, or is it easier to whinge about "greenwashing as an end-run around County code"?
I could just as easily say "who cares, I don't live down there" but these issues are affecting all of Puna.
Yes, DLNR is on it and has already started the investigation. So everyone can see what SB 2274 was really about I am working on the link to a google map that will verify what I am talking about. In the google map you will see that the conservation forest behind SPACE has been ravished. Many trees have been removed and illegal grubbing has occurred. I am not saying they did it that remains to be investigated. I had a whistle blower call my house and share with me why she left Belly Acres. She claims that she had to leave because she could not tolerate anymore tree death to be used to build SPACE but that is still to be verified and can be done by matching the stumps on the state conservation land to the poles that are holding up SPACE.

How, exactly, will a DLNR investigation provide any solution to people's daily needs?
Still waiting for a constructive suggestion. "You can't do it (here)" isn't a solution.

Saving the conservation forest from greedy parasites is part of a solution to the people's daily needs. Also, there is a commercially zoned store at the end of the road that is expanding to address the communities needs. Why not support them. There is opportunities there in the parking lot to have daily markets so people can make money.

For some reason, if I read back through this thread, it seems like there's a vendetta against Belly Acres; no local solutions are offered, people should apparently just drive to everything.
Remember, the failure of SB2274 affects all of Hawaii Island, not just SPACE; the attitude seems to be "we don't want it -- so nobody can have it". Classic.

I like what Graham has done for the area over the last twenty years. It certainly exceeds anything his detractors have accomplished. He has done it with massive community support. A couple complainers who show up late, after the fact, shouldn't be driving the wagon. But, as usual, it only takes one fool to spoil a party.
Any problem that exists was created originally by the County of Hawaii's ill will, ineptitude and incompetence.... oh and DLNR too.

I'm bored with you all! You are not dealing with substance just fluff. If ridicule is your only response well then go on do your worst eventually we are going to get to the truth of SB 2274. So you like Graham what does that have to do with anything. It is about a piece of poorly written legislation that flew on the radar screen thanks to Senator Russell Ruderman who I bet, based on his early remarks, didn't even bother to read SB 2274 in its entirety before introducing it but that's just my opinion. I do know towards the end of the bills life Senator Ruderman did say in an email that the bill could be improved and that it wouldn't bother him either way if the bill passed or failed. So much for loyalty if we wait a little longer the Senator will probably throw Graham under the bus to save his political ass (Excuse me I mean "butt")

So you don't like Graham. We can tell. It's not about SB2274, it's about your dislike for Graham.
Most every bill written has some human history behind it.
